Based on the impact of the decision, I find it helpful to get point of view from people completely unlike myself, hopefully someone with similar project experience or similar roles. The point is to find someone who you trust that approaches things differently. That’s the best way I’ve found to broaden your understanding.

2 Involve the right people

Once the project leader decides on the level of involvement of the team in the decision-making process, they need to select the right people to participate. They should consider the following criteria: relevance, diversity, credibility, and availability. Relevance means that the team members have direct or indirect stake or interest in the decision. Diversity means that the team members have different backgrounds, skills, opinions, and perspectives that can enrich the discussion and avoid groupthink. Credibility means that the team members have the trust and respect of the project leader and other stakeholders. Availability means that the team members can commit the time and energy needed for the decision-making process.

4 Empower and support the team

Project leaders can tap into the team's expertise in project decision-making by empowering and supporting them to take ownership and responsibility for the decision. They can do this by delegating authority and autonomy to the team members, providing them with the necessary resources and information, and coaching and mentoring them along the way. They can also recognize and reward the team members for their efforts and achievements, and celebrate their successes. They can also solicit and provide feedback to the team members, and help them learn from their mistakes and improve their decision-making skills.

Project decision-making does not end with making the decision. Project leaders need to evaluate and monitor the decision and its outcomes, and tap into the team's expertise to do so. They can involve the team members in setting and tracking the key performance indicators, measuring the impact and benefits of the decision, and identifying and addressing any issues or risks that arise. They can also involve the team members in reviewing and reflecting on the decision-making process, and identifying the strengths and weaknesses, the lessons learned, and the best practices to apply in the future.

Project decision-making is a collaborative and dynamic process that requires project leaders to tap into the team's expertise.
