Many parents are afraid to come to school about their children. Parenting is not equal and/or easy for all & children are unique. When children do not act well at home; parents hope the teachers can do a better job and get their children to act better there at school. Often that is not the case. Sometimes a parent can meet with a teacher & write down what is said--Then take themselves & their specific note- to talk with a Life Skills counselor who may be able to help parents address the needs of their children and also their own needs. It takes about 3 meetings and someplace at the State Health and Human Services might be able to a direct you where to get this leg up support. I will start to share these tips also... 2 Set clear goals and expectations

You can also use creative methods, such as videos, podcasts, or blogs, to showcase your students' work or invite parents to participate. You should use a mix of formal and informal, one-way and two-way, and individual and group communication methods, depending on the type and stage of the event.

If 40% of children are not reading proficient--do the math--maybe we must assume 40% of Parents are NOT reading proficient. What if Mother can not Read & Father can? ..& visa versa.Who goes to schools on issues about kids (when both have to work)---If mother can not read; most likely Dad would need to go - possibly Mother is self conscious.There are solutions let me offer one. If you cannot read, say it! Ask if teacher could call - set an appt. about once each 2 months-first Monday 4:00 pm. (Share this whole conversation with other parent). Do this--"Thank the Teacher" for all they do .... tell them it is helpful & you will try to help them also. You will get what you need. Step 1-support. (NOW someone has to read this to these parents.

4 Be respectful and inclusive

When you talk to parents about school events, you should always be respectful and inclusive of their diverse perspectives, experiences, and opinions. Sometimes there is literally nothing parents can do because one works 2 jobs & the other can not read but does drive. School sports today cost a lot of money so your kids is not included in that group. What else can you do for your kids--when schools want you to come there & see how your kids are doing. I support you go & be proud for your kids work in schools--see all around that classroom for what the teacher show you --See where your child does participate. Be sure to come home & praise your child & praise their teacher. This time with teacher is not about the parent--or it might be asking for your help with your child.Homework is not an option to help with if you can not read as a parent. Maybe homework with one of their peers could be.

5 Follow up and follow through

Finally, you should follow up and follow through with your communication before, during, and after the event. You should remind and confirm the parents about the event details, such as the date, time, location, or agenda, and provide them with any updates or changes. You should also communicate with them during the event, such as by sending photos, videos, or messages, or inviting them to share their feedback or questions. After the event, you should thank them for their attendance or involvement, and share the outcomes, results, or highlights of the event.

Always be proud of your child's good work. When we get children reading as equals, life in schools & for teachers will change. Parents Communicate your needs--have someone- a friend, a child- read ALL the notes as best they can that are sent home. Call back- to a recorded teachers line to show support. Parenting is hard enough time & get the teachers on your side also. If you do not read---soon I hope to see A Reading Skill Recovery...course in Career Centers for all of you who want it. It does not take long to catch up with reading. All needed after that.... is a Phonics & Vocabulary course. Or..ask others to read notes sent home (from teacher) to you. Or call a friend (with a child in the same grade) share important ones with you .

For new teachers: Make sure the first time you are reaching out to a parent is NOT for disciplinary reasons! You are trying to work TOGETHER with the parents because you are both on the same team and want their student to succeed! It's going to be very hard for a parent to hear you if the first time you are talking to them is about their child's poor behavior/grades. Reach out the first week of school, to say something positive about their kid and ask how you can help them be successful in your class.

I think also that it is important to understand parents' goals for their children/wards.In my years in the classroom,Boarding Houses as well, I have come to appreciate the different aspirations of parents for their wards. Whereas some want their wards to end up in high-flying careers, others are happy to see their wards develop inwardly,make lasting friendships that will form a vast networking base for their adult life-in particular if they have special talents or a family business to join. Having this view and knowing who wants what prepares a good ground for how to interact with parents as they meet you. It is not ever, 'one cap fits all' these days.
