Tampoco debes cerrarte a un solo software. 3DS Max, Maya, Blender son programas que pueden centrarse en un modelado de objetos, mientras que luego en ZBrush, el mismo Blender o cualquier software de esculpido 3D puede formar parte de una creación manual de detalles y un acabado High Poly. Personalmente trabajo con Blender y ZBrush, y puntualmente con 3DS Max para crear assets para videojuegos.

If we are talking about tackling a COMPLEX model then probably you should already have a software of choice. Almost always the best software is the one you have the most experience with and feel comfortable using it. Also consider the art style of your projects, some apps have more efficient tools for a certain art style. Personally, I prefer blender for more stylized modeling and ZBrush if I'm going for something hi-poly and almost realistic.

Gathering references actually is the first step not the third. you may think how your model should look like but you don't, so do yourself and your teammates a favor. Install PureRef, jump to Pinterest, ArtStation and Google and keep searching.
Natural talent (to build from scratch and zero) is rare, artists still gather inspiration from somewhere. Same goes in 3d designing, having mood boards, color palette, concept, etc. is a big leap when visualising your product. Go get your peg! Explore and maximize your search engines, experiment! However, still add your own touches to it to differentiate it from others, uniqueness.
Building a mood board / Reference panel is very helpful to keep the whole project' artistic approach consistent. Collect images, preferably photos, not other 3D, when you are portraying a real world subject. Have all the references in one place for quick checks during the whole process. There are some helpful software for that, PureRef is the one I use. But you can use whater you want, Milanote, OneNote, or even Microsoft Paint, if you want to, the important thing is have everything available at a glance and easy to navigate through the images, color paletts, videos.

One of the most important aspects of creating the blockout/ Proto for your character or asset, is to have a clear understanding of the line language from the concept art. In many ways you can start by overdrawing in Photoshop the outline of the big forms and trying to understand the thoughts behind the concept artist when creating the concept (specifically for complex concepts). In my experience and thanks to my past art directors guidance, understanding the line language is what allows you to gets grip on basic forms and nail the proportions. The straight lines, V lines and m like Lines where the direction of the lines change, are incredibly important and in many cases they keep the style and design for a whole set of characters.
Not only is blocking out an important and fundamental part of creating appealing shapes, you can also reuse these blockouts across various characters, significantly streamlining your creative process.

However, details like these ones can also be applied in textures for avoiding increasing your sculpt file sizes.

Existem possibilidades para produzir bons renders dentro do próprio Zbrush, porém, estudar softwares que contenham bons renderizadores, pode elevar bastante a qualidade do seu produto final, e a estética da apresenta??o do seu modelo. In my experience, it depends on what type of project are you doing. If it’s simple freelance project then keep the polygon count to intermediate level, don’t go for too much polygon numbers (results in more resource consumption & time to manage the mesh & doing retopology). & obviously see the render realtime view in EEV engine then if it suits go for Cycles! Keep in view the 3d printing software req’s in mind when designing model.

Even if you manage it, the time spent on the project can stretch out and become discouraging. Instead, set clear goals on what you want to learn or improve in that specific project, and keep the rest of the project within your comfort zone. This way, each project not only enhances the skills you already have but also allows you to explore new areas without spreading yourself too thin. For each new project, ask yourself, "What skill do I want to work on?" If there are several skills you want to improve, pick one or two for your next project and keep a list for future projects.
Use customized brushes to add repetitive complex details. Don't get intimidated by the complexity and divide your mesh into chunks and sculpt each part separately.
Always, always know your designing flow. Stick to it so you won't get stuck when something happens, you can easily navigate where and how to fix it.
