How do you stay up-to-date with data visualization trends in your community?

I believe in this concept. There are so many experts & MVPs that are wonderful about sharing their knowledge. I benefit substantially as a result. I follow these people and their companies on LinkedIn, I signup for their email newsletters, and if I am lucky they offer free webinars where I can increase my knowledge. For those experts, thank you for sharing your knowledge, it is greatly appreciated.

Identify thought leaders, experts, and practitioners in the field of data visualization and follow them on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. These individuals often share their perspectives, insights, and examples of cutting-edge work, giving you a direct window into the latest trends.

As a BI Lead in our company I try to keep our BI-specialists up-to-date to dataviz trends. I follow multiple telegram BI and analytics communities, read article on professional websites and blogs. I always share the most interesting news, articles, books and other materials with our in-company BI-community and inspire others to share materials of their own

Staying current with data visualization trends is vital. I rely on a combination of dedicated industry, Experts, and influencers' posts, Sometimes free webinars, and networking with fellow professionals in the data visualization community. This ensures I'm always informed about the latest techniques, tools, and best practices.

Another way to keep up with the new features and updates is to join the community of different tools like Tableau and Power BI which will help you to learn and stay up to date. As per my experience the tools communities should be strong and helpful just like Tableaus. But if you want to learn new skills then social media, blogs are another way of learning and updating your skills.

This is great. I'm on Storytelling with Data, and through my own (sporadic) participation in the monthly challenges, I've come across some really awesome data stories from other professionals out there. One of them even agreed to let me feature her work in one of the lessons in the Power BI course that I teach! It's a fantastic way to share your work, enjoy the work of others, and grow your community.

I stay updated and make it a weekly practice to review new posts on my favorite forums. I go through my bookmarks one-by-one. I am in the forums when I need help obviously, but I also go to read and discover new information. And perhaps if I am lucky, I have the information that someone else is looking for, and of course I will post what I know.

Discord servers are one of the main places where you can find new trends on basically anything, data viz included. This applies also for Reddit, where trends literally begin and explode, which then get picked up by search engines.

Being part of a community is the only way people can grow long-term. Getting engaged with the Tableau community in Brisbane is one of the best things I have done for my career. Very hard to find a bunch of people that are more committed and willing to invest their time to help others. It's not just about trends, but also about refining our craft and pushing boundaries. If you're in Brisbane and passionate about data, joining this community is a no-brainer!

I am a Tableau developer and have attended Tablesu conference twice. I can say attending conferences are great learning opportunities. I have always had something I could bring back and use.

Yes it’s a valid point. Attending events and conferences is a highly effective strategy for staying updated on data visualization trends. These gatherings provide a direct and immersive way to learn about the latest developments in the field. Here are some key points to consider when attending events and conferences to stay up to date with data visualization trends:

One of my favorites. There are an a ton of Excel MVPs and various companies that offer free webinars and events. Yes, they are promoting products and courses they are selling. A purchase is not a requirement of attendance. I have attended many of these events and webinars, I gained a great deal of knowledge from the free event. There were a handful of which I purchased courses from. A favorite feature of mine is lifetime access (at no additional cost). This was I have the ability to learn at my convenience with no deadline. Check my LinkedIn profile, I do have many of my certifications posted. But you can attend the free events, learning, and then not purchasing the course offered. But you will learn, which is why you should sign up.

Not only should you go to conferences, but you should challenge yourself while you're there. Every day, you should attend at least one session on a topic you know NOTHING about, and see what ideas that generates for you. And submit a presentation when they open the call for speakers! It could be a solo talk or you could be on a panel, but it's not only a lot of fun to speak at these events, but you'll also encounter people in your audience who can offer suggestions and more opportunities for growth.

As a contractor, I do not have the ability to attend events and conferences in-person, since the client I work for would not pay for them (no clients do). However I do make a habit of attending all of the virtual events, conferences, webinars and more that are free. These are great to learn more about everything, and connect with people. I have attended so many of these virtual events that many of the MVPs know me by name. I strive to be better every day, and I do that by ensuring each day I learn something new. What I learn could be tiny, like a keyboard short or Big like learning more in Power BI, or anywhere in between. Continue to learn and be better than you were yesterday.

Best way to learn - hands on! Do personal projects using personal data, which then gives you something to look forward to also when learning - the output of the analysis could probably help you identify where you are spending more (using personal finances data), or maybe the next movie to watch (using movies database from imdb etc.). Especially for people looking for their first job in data this is the best way to show project experience too.

There are great data visualization tools for all budgets. It is nearly impossible to keep up with all of them. However, most people rely heavily on their comfort tool, trying to stretch its capabilities (usually PowerBI). Each tool has strengths and use cases that make it preferable in certain scenarios. Venture beyond your comfort choice to expand your toolbox and tackle any visualization problem. As a side note, also bear in mind that most visualization challenges do not require a dashboard or complex graphs. A single graph or table is usually better than overwhelming your users (and yourself).

In my experience, this is the most important thing you can do to stay up to date. Bar graphs and line graphs have went relatively unchanged for a long time because they are already extremely efficient ways to communicate with data. The output doesn’t change much, it’s mostly just efficiencies with the data behind the scenes that change over time. The trick is to make sure your work is always giving your end user the most effective output possible, and feedback, especially between other analysts and your end users, is critical to achieving this.

In my experience i would say this is the best area we needs to concentrate to make us more ip to date with the current trends. We can ask for user experience or feedbacks from our coworkers or others after using the data visualisations which has created by us

Soliciting feedback from your coworkers, co-analysts is a very effective way to get better at all things analytics especially visualization.

Having a mentor and/or getting critique on your work is really important. There are many on LinkedIn who are willing to provide one-to-one sessions for free. Specifically in #datafam you can easily find amazing mentors to help and guide you to the right resources. But the main things to remember are that the initiative and drive to seek feedback has to come from you. More importantly value the time these mentors are taking out of personal time to help you. Don't just go with open ended questions and feedback. Be very meticulous, do your homework and seek answers to specific questions.

Generative AI also provides an invaluable tool for both out-of-the-box data visualization, but also as a tool for learning data viz with step by step guidance. It’s vital that future data viz professionals understand the value of these tools as a productivity and learning multiplier. It is, however, important to note that the outputs of these Gen AI tools must be extensively checked for validity and bias - a valuable skill by itself!

Data visualization is in used in many places one can see graphs, and charts while watching cricket, while reading crime trends in some local papers while exploring share markets, and even in day-to-day life applications like Paytm in India. So the point is if a new type of visualization amazes you explore it through chat GPT, Bard, etc
