1 Identify your stakeholders

Stakeholders are anyone who has an interest or influence in your library, such as patrons, staff, funders, partners, policymakers, media, and the general public. To show them that libraries are valuable, you need to understand their needs, expectations, and perspectives. If you're like me, educated in the Humanities, and yet of the working class, you'll know from firsthand experience that libraries still matter. Especially public ones! According to WordsRated's, back in 2019 something like 54% of Americans were "registered borrowers" of public libraries! Just a few years ago, and, like I stated in my first paragraph, shows just how relevant libraries are. Remember, not everyone has access to the internet at home! The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) tells us that 6% of Americans (apprx. 19 million, in Real Terms) still do not have "access to fixed broadband services at threshold speeds." (I.e., sufficient connection.) This matters because an UNDER-educated workforce means an under-rated nation!

Identifying stakeholders needs to go hand in hand with understanding a library's foundational role in a free society. Far more than a venue for transactional exchange of books, libraries represent the very marketplace of ideas upon which culture grows, learns, and survives. Some who present themselves as stakeholders--be they patrons, partners, staff, funders, policymakers, media, or the general public--undermine that claim by advocating an ideological purity that forecloses the potential for debate and competing ideas. By definition, you cannot be a stakeholder of a library if you'd rather shut it down--or restrict its holdings to ideas you personally find palatable. That's not a library; it's a tool of thought control.

2 Define your value proposition

Your value proposition is a clear and concise statement that explains what your library does, how it benefits your stakeholders, and what makes it unique or different from other options. It should answer the question: why should someone care about or support your library? Your value proposition should be based on your library's mission, vision, and goals, as well as your stakeholders' needs and preferences. You can use your value proposition to craft your elevator pitch, tagline, or slogan, as well as to guide your communication and marketing efforts.

My Value Proposition for libraries--in particular, Public libraries, is they are curators of knowledge via books, obviously. But that includes E-Books, when you include that libraries ALSO deliver access to the internet to everyone! Like I've referenced in my previous statement, an UNDER-educated populace equals and underrated society. So, if America wants to be competitive on the global stage in terms of jobs, economics, & lifestyle, this requires STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math)-investments. Indeed, according to Kforce, it's estimated by 2025 (just over 2 years) approximately 3.5 MILLION jobs related to STEM will likely be in America, alone! Sadly, Kforce expects 2 million of those UNFILLED! STEM equals tech-JOBS!

You can collect data from various sources, such as usage statistics, service evaluations, user testimonials, case studies, stories, or anecdotes. You can also use frameworks or tools, such as the Logic Model, the Social Return on Investment (SROI), or the Library Value Calculator, to help you quantify and communicate your data. You should share your data with your stakeholders in a clear, compelling, and relevant way, using charts, graphs, infographics, reports, newsletters, or presentations.

Besides my reference to WordsRated in my first statement about libraries (about 54% of Americans were "registered borrowers" of public libraries ~ 2019), there are other sources that show us just how important (public) libraries are to modern society. Source, EveryLibrary had referenced that even during the Covid Pandemic (surveyed in 2022), publication Library Journal had gotten responses from 214 public libraries throughout the US & discovered that among those libraries, operating budgets went up by 3%, while the personnel staffing those libraries went up by 4%! And that survey was based on years 2020 to 2021--in the height of the Pandemic! All this while millions conducted virtual meetings via online & downloads of materials!

You should also seek and provide feedback, recognition, and appreciation to your stakeholders, as well as invite them to participate in or co-create your library's initiatives.

Yes, I totally agree with your comments Joseth, especially with your last comment about how libraries were still being used, even in the height of the Pandemic years of 2020 to 2021, despite millions of people conducting virtual meetings via Zoom as well as for the continued online researches. Public Libraries will always be of vital importance for the preservation of the many thousands of printed books and other written material that is provided for everyone's enjoyment (reading), education (learning) and research (writing or studying). In fact, my own previously and recently published books are both placed and are soon to be placed in the National library archives of Queensland and Canberra, in Australia.

En mi experiencia, las bibliotecas tienen que tener estrechos lazos con la comunidad en donde se encuentran. Se deben realizar actividades que beneficien a la comunidad y permitan mostrar la importancia de la biblioteca, ya sea cediendo sus espacios para reuniones de vecinos, maratones de lecturas para ni?os, jóvenes y adultos. De manera que se implique la comunidad y se muestre la importancia de la biblioteca
