How do you select and engineer features in a data mining project?

In my view, some steps can help, such as: Understand the specific problem you are trying to solve with data mining, Perform exploratory data analysis to understand data characteristics, identify patterns and evaluate data quality, Use feature selection (Filter Methods, Wrapper Methods, Embedded Methods), Use Feature Engineering (Handle Missing Values, Encode Categorical Variables, Scale Numeric Variables, Create Derived Features), Split data into training and validation sets to evaluate the impact of feature selection and engineering on model performance and Use appropriate evaluation metrics (accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score) to evaluate model performance with different sets of features.

In my opinion, selecting and engineering features involves identifying relevant variables that can contribute to the predictive modeling process. This typically starts with domain knowledge and understanding the problem at hand. Once the variables are identified, feature engineering techniques are applied to transform or create new features that enhance the predictive power of the model. These techniques may include normalization, scaling, encoding categorical variables, creating interaction terms, and generating new features through transformations or combinations of existing ones.

These are individual measurable characteristics of your data points. Imagine features as the building blocks used to train a model. While preparing a simple structured dataset using data mining, each uniques column could potentially represent a single feature. A column could also be categorical which can be engineered for getting multiple sub features.

For me, domain knowledge is essential to understanding which features are relevant. Visualizing the data helps in gaining insights and identifying important features. Features with high coefficients or strong correlations with the target variable are more likely to be informative and may be prioritized during feature selection. Correlation analysis and feature selection help identify the most relevant features.

In my view ,to select and create features for a data mining project: 1. Understand the problem and choose the right data. 2. Analyze the data, select useful features, and create new ones if needed. 3. use ETL and EDA methods to visualize the data 4.Validate features, iterate based on model performance like ANOVA, chi square, and correlation. Communicate findings clearly to stakeholders.

Use z-score normalization, min-max standardiation, or some other method. - Dimensionality Reduction: Reduce variables to focus on informative ones. I usually, trim using PCA. - Feature Selection: Use algorithms to retain only relevant features.
