1 Privacy requirements

Before you start designing a distributed system, you need to identify and define the privacy requirements of your system. 2 Privacy threats

Once you have defined the privacy requirements, you need to analyze the potential privacy threats that your distributed system may face. These threats can come from malicious attackers, unauthorized insiders, or faulty nodes and can compromise the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of the data or the users. Common privacy threats in distributed systems include eavesdropping, data leakage, data tampering, data inference, identity theft, and denial of service. Each of these actions can have serious consequences for users and nodes if not addressed properly.

4 Privacy patterns

Designing and implementing privacy mechanisms can be made easier with the use of privacy patterns, which are general descriptions of a problem, its context, a solution, and the consequences of applying a privacy mechanism in a specific scenario. Privacy patterns can help simplify the complexity of privacy engineering, prevent mistakes, communicate and document decisions, and even adapt and customize solutions. Examples of such patterns include proxy re-encryption, which allows a node to delegate decryption without revealing keys; differential privacy, which adds noise to data to prevent identification of individual records; secure multiparty computation, which allows multiple nodes to jointly compute a function without revealing inputs; and zero-knowledge proof, which allows a node to prove a statement without revealing additional information.

5 Privacy evaluation

Evaluating the privacy of a distributed system is essential for measuring and validating how well it meets the privacy requirements and mitigates privacy threats. Privacy evaluation is a process of testing, analyzing, or verifying the privacy properties and behaviors of a system. It can be performed at different stages of development, such as design time, implementation time, or deployment time. For example, at design time you can use privacy models, metrics, or checklists to assess the privacy aspects of the architecture and design. At implementation time you can use privacy tools, libraries, or frameworks to implement the privacy mechanisms in the code and configuration. And at deployment time you can use privacy audits, reviews, or certifications to verify the compliance and performance of your system in a real environment.
