I believe that we should be looking for ways to develop our careers. It could be promotions with more scope, duties, and responsibilities or maybe venture into a different area of interest. There is nothing wrong with being curious about what is out there, personally, I would prefer to promote where I am at but sometimes that is not possible for some. Stagnation is not a good thing, professional growth is important.

2 Schedule your job search wisely

Don't use your work time or resources to conduct your job search. Not only is it unethical and unprofessional, but it can also get you in trouble if your employer finds out. Instead, allocate some time before or after work, during lunch breaks, or on weekends to look for jobs, send applications, and follow up with potential employers. Use your personal devices and accounts to avoid leaving any traces on your work computer or phone. Turn off notifications and alerts that might distract you or expose your job search during work hours.

It's important to make sure you're not using your work email too. Keep in mind your current employer can probably access your information, whether you work from home or not.

You don't have to announce your job search to everyone you know. In fact, it's better to keep it confidential until you have a solid offer in hand. Only tell trusted people who can help you with referrals, recommendations, or advice. Avoid posting your job search status on social media or online platforms where your current employer or colleagues might see it. Be selective about the jobs you apply for and the companies you contact. Don't waste your time and energy on positions that are not a good fit for you or that might conflict with your current role.

Being discreet about your job search could actually backfire, depending on the circumstances. Sharing your career goals openly might lead to attracting opportunities you hadn't even considered. There are several factors that matter here like, if you are currently employed and how long you have been working for work. In the situation of a layoff, for example, sharing your availability could be beneficial. In fact, an Administrative Assistant on my LinkedIn network shared that she had lost her job to social media. Her post went viral on LinkedIn and she landed 3 offers within 2 weeks.

4 Be honest and respectful

If you get invited for an interview, be honest and respectful with both your current and potential employers. Don't lie about why you need time off or use sick days or personal emergencies as excuses. Instead, request for a flexible schedule or a vacation day in advance and plan your interviews accordingly. Try to avoid scheduling interviews during peak work hours or when you have important deadlines or meetings. Be respectful of your current employer's policies and expectations. A job interview at another company really isn't your current employer's business. In the event of an interview during work hours, you don't need to tell your current employer the details. After all, you never know how it will turn out. Instead, you need to be asking whether or not the business can operationally sustain your time away from work. Sometimes you have to do what's best for you. Your best interests are covered when you are respectful of your employer but create boundaries. It's never the right move to say bad things about them in an interview.

5 Prepare for the transition

Once you receive a job offer that you are happy with, prepare for the transition from your current role to your new one. Review your contract and check if you have any obligations or restrictions regarding your resignation, such as a notice period, a non-compete clause, or a severance package. Write a professional and polite resignation letter and inform your manager and HR department in person or by phone. Offer to help with the handover of your tasks and projects and leave on good terms. Thank your current employer and colleagues for their support and cooperation and maintain a positive relationship with them.
