How do you safeguard your media production portfolio online?

Doing your research and finding the platform that fits you is definitely important. There are several good options at reasonable prices. Some offer more customizable features and security options than others. Reaching out to your network and see what other creatives are using can be beneficial as well.

Nothing is more secure than confidence. Confidence in knowing what you can do. Every creative takes from other creatives, but eventually, if they can't deliver, they are found out. I know what I can deliver at any time. I know how to get to the finish line and make my client happy with the results. I call myself a Postman. I deliver everyday. I know this sound just like bragging, but that is what you should be doing. Just believe in yourself and your work and you will find a path.

So unfortunately, in this day and age we definitely have to deal with unauthorized use, theft, and plagiarism. Even if you find a good and secure platform, somebody somebody’s gonna find a hack for it. I will use Watermarks one that can be seen but faded… Then I’ll put a second one on there that’s really small and hidden. So if I do have some kind of a dispute that comes up or prove that it’s my intellectual property, I can always zoom in and show that my logo watermark is hidden on there. Because most of the time thieves will be able to somehow remove or disguise the main watermark, but they don’t usually ever zoom in looking for a hidden one. Do your best to not let any of this discourage you or dampen your creativity.

I feel that a lot of this comes down to organization and curating what you are comfortable sharing. I use Ghost CMS to host a portfolio and blog; the platform allows me to export all of my posts as a nice all encompassing JSON file. This is a wonderful for backing up a website. I partition my workflow with draft and final docs, DAW files, videos, etc. all organized. If you save the files but struggle or cannot find them later then they are as good as lost. Make version control your friend here. For a worst case scenario, I've got everything backed up on my PC and two external TB hard drives: one for immediate storage, one for long term/archived storage which I call the ice box.

Be aware that recent advances in artificial intelligence have allowed sophisticated prompt engineers to remove watermarks on video clips entirely—so this effort may be in vain whole causing a degraded user experience. Follow the trends and AI and deeply consider why you want to protect your portfolio, what value you wanted to provide, and all the risks of it being watermarked or non-watermarked.

As you are creating a reel of existing work, make yourself aware of the ownership and usage rights of the content you are posting. Consider soliciting email permission from the commissioning clients for using the content you created in your reel, and remember that talent and model rights do not necessarily automatically extend to portfolios.

Register your content with appropriate copyright and trademark authorities to establish legal rights and protection for your intellectual property.
