How do you respond to criticism from experts in your field?

There are times where we can feel unready to receive any criticism, even from well-respected people. When that happens, and you still wish to give a response, try this: “I’m so glad you took the time to give me a feedback. Thank you so much.” This gives you room to process the criticism in your own time, and yet shows respect timely to acknowledge the expert.

I believe it says a lot when someone takes the time to comment on something. A good frame of mind is that someone took the time to give feedback and to look at things neutrally and not defensively

Let’s be honest. Who really likes to be criticised? It’s hard. So instant of trying to trick ourselves into positivity, let’s first acknowledge the hurt, the pain, the annoyance, the negative reaction. Let’s just acknowledge that we are humans and not robots built to perform a task perfectly. Then, once we have allowed ourselves time to feel these feelings, then we can move on and start to take responsibility and accountability for the feedback we are receiving.

Listen with an open mind. There is always something to learn from others regardless of whether you will like or not like what you hear.

Be honored when experts criticize your thought leadership. It means they think it's worth criticizing. But when they do, remember that not only may they have entrenched interests they feel threatened by your thought leadership, they might not even be consciously aware that they have such interests. And if they're not aware of this, don't criticize back. Just point out where you think they are incorrect, or what is unproven that they assume to be fact.

One thing that I have found tremendously helpful is to first repeat the criticism back in my own words to ensure that I have a full understanding of what was communicated. This also allows me to actively process the information and create the space needed to think objectively. Part of thought leadership is considering how your ideas or frameworks apply in different settings and under different conditions. Carefully addressing the criticism, void of emotional attachment, only makes your work better. I welcome this opportunity.

Asking people to elaborate is a huge sign of respect. People are very aware that attention is minimal, to a lot of initial responses are minimal. Asking experts to elaborate, maybe with an example, is bascially giving those expert the stage to lead with their insights.

Listening to what someone is saying will help. Criticizing someone can be damaging when not done with respect. Still after they have said what they want, thank them for their input and if it is something you might use or try tell them you might try it. If not just say thank you and move on.

You can do this by: - Supporting your arguments with data and solid evidence. - Avoiding subjective interpretations. - Looking for specific examples of its application. This will result in a stronger response that doesn’t disregard the criticism, but acknowledges its role in improving and testing your theories.

The best thing you could do with an expert's resposne is use it as a base for your next content. Improving isn't proving someone wrong. It's actually creating more valauble content. That's how you advance. That's how you level up.

If the criticism is valid, consider implementing changes or improvements. This shows adaptability and a commitment to excellence.

Recognize that no matter how much of an expert that person is and you are, that perspectives and context are important. These are sometimes missing when you get criticized. For example, they didn’t read the full paper you wrote but criticized you on an article based off that paper instead. Often times it is better to dissolve it within yourself and move on. There are more important battles to fight.

Getting someone to disagree with you on social, especially LinkedIn (where it's less common), raises emotions. Just remember - that storm happens only insdie you. In a day, everyone will move one. Better focus on your next content.

Regardless of the criticism's nature, always maintain a professional demeanor. Responding defensively or dismissively can harm your reputation.

Do what you unclined not to do. You will get a fresh experience that will grow you. You will suprise yourself. When you change your behavior your attitudes and perspectives will follow change correspondingly.

I don't know I don't know. That's the attitude I have. Seeing things from another perspective and people have different maps of the world. Positive dialogue is always good and encourages learning. However, be mindful where someone wants to be antagonistic for the sake of being antagonistic. In that case, I just choose to say thank you and not engage

I am cool, as I never like to impose unless people come to me for feedback or ego boost. I won't comment on my peers if I am not asked to. If I received feedback (which I never asked for), I just smiled. Shouldn't we only mind our own businesses?

Thought Leadership isn't just about your own content. It's also about engaging with other people's content. So if an expert commented on your post - feel free to do the same for them. Establishing a 'comment-reply' relationships serves both of you.
