How do you resolve conflicts with bandmates while on tour?

Very interesting issue. Open communication, crucial in personal relationships, environments like that of a music band, or any workplace, emphasizes honesty and transparency. Candid expressions, clarity in sharing information, and avoiding hiding the truth are essential to prevent misunderstandings. Respect for opinions and viewpoints, even if they differ, is fundamental. Feedback, practiced today as known, should be timely and focus on behaviours or actions, not on the person themselves.

The 7-Step REMIX Process takes between 20 and 40 minutes and can be done by any band member, often helped by another in the process, by 'scribing' while they close their eyes and speak. There are a lot of 'triggers' when touring in close proximity and they show up in an energetic change of mood. An upbeat mental song becomes a sad ballad... 1. PAUSE. Breathe. Feel the way the beat has changed. 2. REWIND. Realise I've started singing a sad ballad. 3. LISTEN. Is the song authentic? 4. EDIT. Erase the rubbish lyrics and keep the 5% that are inspired. 5. REMIX. Boost the bass and re-record the lyrics to express my genuine feelings. 6. RELEASE. Get my inner DJ to play the new version. 7. DANCE. Feel my energy and enthusiasm returning.

I think respect is the key tenent in making music together. As in an orchestra, there has to be a leader/concert master to take a final decision but each person should be allowed to make their contribution or their voice heard. If a suggestion is not taken, it should not be taken personally. In classical music ensembles, many agree prior that it will be a work only collaboration and while on tour, there will only be work association meetings, while others like the post concert relaxation. If this can be established prior to tours, it could eliminate possible arguments. Time out also allows any possible flare ups to dissipate, before looking at issues in the clear light of day.

Even though a band is a cooperative engagement there still needs to be a leader and having a leader is the best way to bind a cooperative together. Even in creativity when two or more people are collaborating there needs to be someone who make the executive and final decisions. Sometimes it is necessary to make changes. Knowing when to do so is essential to the band's success.

A formal communication channel is preferred while touring in a group. Rule during the tour- no conflicts. Be friendly to all. Respect others space & value it. Avoid getting close, that may reflect bad on your personality. Avoid using others' items like towel, perfume if sharing a room. Follow hygiene etiquettes strictly. Always extend a supporting hand in crisis. Enjoy when travelling, this increases team spirit & reduces stress. Avoid things to go out of control. If so, then reach out for help from resources around. Always try to create sweet memories for your team & yourself. They will live with you forever. Hug every one after the tour & pray to meet again soon. Cheers

Certainly, observing boundaries is a key to "getting along". Chances are group members come from different backgrounds, and have varying personal preferences, habits, etc. Respecting each other's choices, space, and things is key to functioning in close spaces with each other for lengthy periods. Group "harmony" also requires setting ground rules before "setting sail". Rules should be established early: Schedules, responsibilities, designated spaces, and what to do when there's conflict. This can easily mitigate against confusion and boundary violations. As is said, "clear is kind - unclear is unkind".

In my experience, living and as a Communications Specialist, Educator and Trainer, consistently clear and effective communication combined with emotional intelligence are key elements for functional and uplifting relationships.

My youngest son is a band performer. I have seen and experienced many changes in him since he started his band. He has been very specific about certain boundaries and has had many difficulties with drugs and alcoholism. I don’t believe he has ever set ground rules pertaining to his particular personal space. As a result some of the habits picked up by him, may have been avoided, had he set ground rules and adhered to them!

Always be mindful of one’s space. Never assume everyone is in the same mood or mindset. Project a positive energy and if the focus is always the team, you’ll see that your mates will take notice and appreciate your objectives.

I think this is the best way to do it. I have interviewed a few band people and have been in bands myself. If you can get people laughing and having fun again that is a good place to relaunch from. If it isn't fun anymore at all, I think you need to ask yourself if the band should stay together. We talk about this exact thing in my interview with Joan of America. My performing son has sought help more than once due to alcoholism and drug abuse. Being in a band and succumbing to the negative traits related to being a band member can put unnecessary pressures on the members. The fact that my son conscientiously joined AA on his own was/is reassuring that he is capable of doing the right thing for himself!
