How do you prove your database development projects are valuable?

The key success factors will change from Project to Project, apart from all the generic metrics mentioned above and which applies to any project , we should understand from the customer the Key Success Factors , achieving which will make the project a success. It may be about adding self data exploration feature for staff or ad-hoc report design and generation. We should also note KPI what we should be monitoring to meet the SLAs.

In my opinion: 1. Clear Objectives: Establish clear, measurable objectives for your database development projects. These could include improving data retrieval times, enhancing data security, increasing data accuracy, or optimizing storage. 2. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Identify and track KPIs that align with your goals. Common metrics include query performance, data integrity, uptime/downtime, and user satisfaction.

Data is the top most need for any kind of projects to define any metrics dashboard to keep track and display the KPI to analyze the market and business trend. Designing and developing the metrics with proper goals will suffice the business objectives and clear path to realistic execution.

In my experience documenting and versioning the documentation of all the changes/ additions of the design in database is very crucial. Hardly is it done by a single person or a team in same location. The process calls for the understanding of the design by teams subsequently working on it through years to clearly articulate the need of the tables, columns or the joins.

Prove your project facets like financial/cost, time to market, functional, non-functional, governance and compliance, and supportability to name a few.

In my opinion most valued thing is Data. and following are key points . Secure Modes of Transmission: Using secure communication methods, such as HTTPS for web applications, helps protect data during transmission. Encryption is crucial for safeguarding sensitive information. Freeze Development Before Hosting: Implementing a freeze on development before hosting the application can ensure that the code is thoroughly reviewed and tested for vulnerabilities.

Longevity. Two internal applications, one large one small, I've implemented in the past have been up and running for over 15 and 10 years, respectively. This has been in the face of off the shelf competition and changes in technology.
