Alignment of goals is crucial. Leadership must come from the business and not from IT. Many projects fail or don’t meet expectations as the business is either not bought in or doesn’t fully understand the project.

To align goals, you will need to truly understand the business challenges or opportunities. This is beyond a single meeting where the business share their "goals" and there is alignment. There is a need for constant involvement with them and also understand the industry trends. From my experiences, many times you will need to dig deeper to truly understand their challenges. Just a simple example, a business stakeholder may raise concerns on system performance and the immediate reaction maybe to increase resources to address performance issues. However upon deeper analysis, the performance "issue" is related to business users overwhelming the systems during a 5 minute peak. There is no cost benefit in increasing resources.

Consider which projects will deliver the most value in terms of revenue growth, cost savings, or improved efficiency. Projects that promise a significant return on investment (ROI) or strategic advantage should be prioritized. I think stakeholder buy-in are overly used and used in a wrong context for many cases. If you can demonstrate the IT projects will bring benefits to the stakeholder, you do not need the buy-in. They will support you with all the resources. The challenges arises when the stakeholders have a different opinion and are sceptical of the IT solutions. In this scenario there is a big misalignment between the problem statement and the propose solution. The key is to have open communications and seek alignment between problem statement and solution.

Monitoring the progress of IT projects is vital to ensure they remain aligned with business objectives. Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) that reflect the desired outcomes of each project. Regularly review these metrics to determine if the projects are on track and delivering the expected benefits. A common mistake longer term is that all parties ‘forget’ the business case and initial project objectives. These must be kept in focus at all times. Even once the project is complete.

Resource allocation faces different challenges in prioritizing projects when you have different organizational structures on where your IT resources sit. Important is to recognize which organizational structure you are faced with so you can create the most optional path to resource allocation. It can even get more complex if you have multiple resource teams sitting at different levels but feed the same objectives.
