How do you plan for innovation?

Aligning teams with focused objectives will help people collaborate more effectively. Once you have a goal(or multiple), cascade down the vision to the respective teams and create action plans. Each plan should include measurable metrics to keep track so teams can adjust their plan accordingly. Last but not least, communicate clearly(and repeatedly if needed) your mission and vision so they truly understand the value behind the innovation and stay motivated.

Innovation implies doing something different that will help the end user. Innovation is only possible with results. You may do something new related to the product, service, or current work conditions that must be aligned with the business strategy, such as adding features to a product or service or developing a new method to solve a problem. Sometimes, insights drive a discovery that gets out of the current business strategy. In this case, a spin-out or a new venture is the way to take advantage of the discovery.

Promoting a 'fail fast, fail forward' strategy is a great way to ensure people are encouraged to take big bets that will enable the organization tackle disruptive challenges in a creative, radical way. This will also build the agile muscle that will be very important in the longer term...
