1 Know your audience

Yes, there is value in preparing a targeted pitch but don’t get distracted by focusing too match on the others. It still is you, the business and a compelling story that make the difference.

One of the most important parts of your pitch is to clearly define the problem that your innovation solves, and how it does so better than the existing alternatives. You need to demonstrate that there is a significant and urgent market demand for your solution, and that you have a unique value proposition that sets you apart from the competition. You also need to explain how your biotech or nanotech innovation works, using simple and accessible language, and avoiding jargon or technical details that may confuse or bore your investors. You can use analogies, metaphors, stories, or visuals to help illustrate your point and make it more memorable.

Aim for having a clear, short and easy to understand 30sec summary, so that others want to spend more of their time with you. Spare all details for later stages, when a discussion has started. Very likely your details will only stick with people if they ask you for them.

3 Show traction and validation

Another key part of your pitch is to show that your innovation is not just a concept, but a viable and scalable product or service. You need to provide evidence of traction and validation, such as customer feedback, user testimonials, pilot projects, partnerships, or awards. You also need to show that you have a clear and realistic roadmap for development, testing, and commercialization, and that you have achieved or are on track to achieve the relevant regulatory approvals, intellectual property protection, and quality standards. You should also highlight any competitive advantages or barriers to entry that you have or plan to create.

Early feedback can provide you new perspectives for product development and commercialization. Additionally by striking those conversations earlier in the process you could also unlock alternative ways to financing which may be appreciated by current investors as it shows validation of the concept while not diluting the equity.

4 Highlight your team and vision

Investors are not only investing in your innovation, but also in you and your team. You need to showcase your team's expertise, experience, and passion for biotech or nanotech, and how you complement each other's skills and roles. You also need to convey your vision and mission, and how you aim to create positive social and environmental impact with your innovation. You should also demonstrate your awareness of the potential risks and challenges that you may face, and how you plan to overcome them.

At this stage it is very much about the people. Most likely many other assumptions you can make at this stage are subject to change and investors are fully aware but what they need to see is that you and your people are willing, capable and likely to succeed in navigating these uncertainties.

Know the competitive environment inside-out and how you can see past it to the finish line. The vision and mission should be central to all that the team does. Early in venture building there is tremendous plasticity, it is critical that the priorities are clear and the same for the team. We has set up OKRs in our start-ups to manage shifting priorities while still working with focus as a team. As a startup, you are short on resources on all fronts (FTEs, cash, time). Also investors will quickly get the sense if they do not hear a similar narrative and priorities from different team members (who could be approached separately)

5 Ask for a specific amount and use

The last part of your pitch is to ask for a specific amount of funding that you need, and how you intend to use it. You should justify your valuation and funding request based on your financial projections, market size, growth potential, and exit strategy. You should also explain how the funding will help you achieve your next milestones and goals, and how it will benefit your investors in terms of return on investment, equity, or other incentives. You should also be prepared to negotiate and answer any questions that your investors may have.

The "story" is a critical element when pitching to investors for start-ups and early-stage biotech and nanotechnology founders. It helps investors connect emotionally with the project. Investors invest in people as much as they invest in ideas. The story should introduce the founders and their passion for the project. It should demonstrate the team's expertise and commitment to overcoming challenges.Investors often seek alignment with their own values and objectives. The story should highlight how the venture aligns with broader societal goals, ethical considerations, or sustainability. A well-told story can capture an investor's attention, make the pitch memorable, and increase the likelihood of securing funding.
