Humour is a fantastic and - when implemented correctly - powerful storytelling tool. Stories, however, are only as good as the way in which they are received by their target audience. This is why any storytelling requires in-depth analysis of the target audience for it to be successful. Nowhere is this more important than with humour. If you want to truly perfect it to your listeners and readers, it is essential you understand them. Humour often sits at the boundaries between acceptable and unacceptable, and an inch over the line kills its effect. This is why understanding your reader is so essential in order to make sure *your* funny lands as *their* funny.

Humor is a superpower! But to truly connect with your audience, know who they are: 1. Who are you trying to tickle? : Are they young professionals or seasoned retirees? 2. What makes them laugh? Current events, pop culture, or clever wordplay? 3. Stay respectful: Avoid humor that might offend or alienate anyone. By understanding your audience, you can tailor your humor to land perfectly. They'll laugh, you'll connect, and everyone wins!

For me, I think of humor in storytelling as like the sprinkles on the cake, but NOT the whole cake (overdose on too much sprinkles will cause diabetes :P). Much like how you get desensitized with too many explosions from a Michael Bay movie, too much humor will ruin the purpose (and plot) of a good story. To be effective, humour should be used sparingly, and in the right context (to the right audience) to make it more impactful, and resonate more. Furthermore, humour can also be used to drive home a point, and make the audience remember your purpose.

The purpose of humor... Your guess is as good as mine ;) In all seriousness, humor helps me connect with people. Someone unable or unwilling to put on a smile might easily consider me 'bad company'. I do acknowledge that humor isn't the secret sauce in all situations and circumstances. And yet, humor is what I wake up to in the morning, what keeps me going throughout the day and puts me to bed at night. My purpose of using humor in storytelling is to say, "hey you, this is me."

Humor can be used in a very similar fashion to the "Pope in the Pool" theory in filmmaking. For those not familiar, you break up a long exposition by showing something visually entertaining (at the same time), and "tricking" the audience into listening to the exposition since they're being entertained. Same thing applies with humor. When you enter into a lengthy exposition, break up the subject matter with humor, stories, or anecdotes to help engage the audience and keep their attention during your more "meaty" sections of content.

I have no objective with humour. It is part of my personality. If all goes to hell, let’s go with a bang, right. For me humour is based on lack of / wrong logic. Either you make fun of it or fix it as a business modeller. I use humour a lot. Why? It works. It takes practice as well. Some people are simply not funny though and try ti be funny. They could be hilarious if they knew this and still tried. Positivity is a pre-req for high performance. Laughing is not as important as a smile, a hope or the knowledge that someone is hopeful in the team. I man a suicide prevention hotline as volunteer and I use humour even there sometimes. It does solve any problem but it caves the crocodile brain for brief moment so we can cry and laugh.

All humor is about benign surprise. Something unexpected, but not threatening, surprises your audience and they respond with a laugh. With this understanding, you have the framework to create humor. Point your audience in one direction...then snap them back in another. It can be in a small phrase with very little setup for a small smile. Or it can be a short list with the first 2 items creating a pattern and the 3rd one breaking it. LinkedIn is great for networking, learning, and scrolling through an entire Zoom meeting. ?? The bigger the setup, the bigger the payoff needs to be. But, these small bits of humor can fit easily into anyone's style.

One of the best ways to use humour that's true to your style is to share things that are... you know... (wait for it)... true ?? Many people think of humour as something to add to a story or speech, which can work for some, but requires way more talent and creativity. A much better strategy is to actually share - Things you've done that are silly or ridiculous - Thing you said - Things you thought (one of my favourites) By definition, if it actually happened to you, it should be true to your style, and it will feel true to anyone who knows you. It's also a much simpler strategy for adding humour than trying to come up with funny lines or jokes, those don't come easy!

I support the idea that humor should be authentic and aligned with your personality and story. It's essential to recognize that humor comes in various forms, such as sarcasm, irony, exaggeration, puns, wordplay, and anecdotes. Discovering the style that resonates with you and fits your voice is crucial. Avoid copying someone else's humor or forcing a style that feels unnatural or uncomfortable. Instead, be authentic, confident, and consistent with your humor. The humor that you include via storytelling can't be outside your regular personality. In other words, it can't be forced. "Trying to be funny" isn't very organic, and it typically misses the mark. If something humorous comes to you as you're writing and it fits the nature of the content, then by all means, make them laugh! After all, as a storyteller, you're baring your soul every time you write a word, so be the most authentic version of yourself that you can be!

To tell a joke effectively, I find that the storyteller needs to "build up" the context first. Then, when the audience least expects it, you unleash the humor on them like crouching tiger, hidden dragon! The best humor is often "unexpected" humor. So find a way to TIME your jokes in your content, and if you do it correctly, the outcome will be hilarious. If not, then the only joke is on you. ;)

Timing is everything, like trying to tell a joke at a funeral (bad idea). Ride the wave of trends, but don't be the person who shows up to the party after everyone's gone home. Whether it's posting at 2 AM to catch insomniac CEOs or hitting 'send' on that email campaign when people are at peak procrastination mode, be the savvy marketer who knows when to strike.

I once started a talk with what I thought was a great line about learning money doesn't matter while on holiday in the Maldives, and out of 50 people in the room, about two laughed... It was brutal. Later I asked a few people and they actually thought it was funny, but they didn't get that I was making a joke, so they didn't laugh. Here's what I learned the hard way: you can't always be funny right at the start of a story - or presentation, or most other pieces of content. Your audience needs to get a feel for you or they might just miss it, so save whatever you think is funny for at least a little way into your talk or story, and be aware of how you're coming across. If you're dead serious, the audience might miss even the best humour.

Be prepared: you might try a joke that doesn't work, and you need to be ok with that, there's nothing worse than not getting the laugh you were expecting and that derailing the next 5 mins of your talk. Also, remember you are not a stand-up comic, the most important part of your speech or presentation is the ideas, humor is one tool you can use to engage with your audience, which will help you to convey those ideas.

There are certain topics that are always off the table, recognize them. Also, there is a trick to repeating a joke. All humor content is baselined on Surprise. So if there is a joke you have already said, say in the beginning, then bring out a very different context and place your joke again in the end. The audience will love you for playing smart. But that doesnt mean you repeat the same lines of the joke. Be subtle. The audience will do the maths for you.
