How do you partner with other sectors for carbon capture and storage?

I focus on CO2 and H2 geostorage and pipeline transport in the Niger Delta region. I've engaged with the IFC and the Nigerian government on CCUS workshop series. I've also participated in webinars for NIMMME, addressing repurposing oil and gas pipelines for CO2 and H2 transport to achieve net-zero goals. CCUS requires collaboration across sectors, especially in developing regions. Global climate events like COP28 are key for oil and gas involvement in CCUS. To prepare, I've proposed a training program for a national oil company's workforce.

As an industrial gas professional with oil and gas experience, we are educated throughout the entire supply chain. From identifying the technology to be used for capture and liquefaction to sending it into cryogenic containers over rail, water or road for injection offsite until pipelines are built. Our partners can identify the pore space and complete the injection well. Our partners can capture the CO2 from flue stack and compress and liquify for transportation.

Partnership of Energy with Power sector brings in following benefits: Reservoir Management: Petroleum engineers bring expertise in reservoir management, optimizing the injection & storage of captured CO2. EOR Techniques: Utilizing CO2 for enhanced oil recovery presents a dual benefit. It not only aids in reducing emissions but also enhances oil recovery from depleted fields, providing an additional revenue stream for oil and gas companies. Technology Integration: Integrating CCS technology into power plants and ensuring its compatibility with existing infrastructure can be technically challenging. It may require significant modifications and investments. CO2 Sales: Partnering with the power sector allows for the sale of captured CO2.

CCS for the power sector may not the the optimal solution. It should be compared with hydrogen feed stock from wind and solar industry. So instead of building a CO2 gas gathering system a hydrogen distribution network should be build. CCS is a work-around solution to a problem - hydrogen is a direct CO2 free solution - and probably cheeper - but omit the oil and gas majors!

We work closely with energy sectors, particularly those involved in power generation and industrial processes. In anticipation of the growing use of hydrogen as a clean fuel source, we are committed to adopting technologies that capture not only CO2 but also other emissions like nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Cement manufacturing is the third largest cause of man-made CO2 emissions due to the production of lime, the key ingredient in cement. One of the main challenge facing the cement industry is reducing CO2 emissions at the same time as meeting global demand. Key strategies to cut carbon emissions in cement production include improving energy efficiency, switching to lower-carbon fuels, promoting material efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions by Carbon capture and storage.

Given that the relative impact of CCS implementation on production costs varies significantly between sub-sectors. The cement industry has a product with a low market price compared to others, if CCS is integrated the production costs of cement may increase greatly, so CCS may be a cost that the cement sector alone could not bear without losing its competitive position in the market. Therefore, the cement sector may seek to integrate into CCS hubs or clusters to share the cost and lessen the impact while maintaining its profit margins.

This sector will require CCS for the eliminate the emmision of CO2 from the limestone, but again the feed stock can be from hydrogen.

CCS makes the most economic sense when combined with utilisation processes that produce high-value chemicals and energy, such as hydrogen and ammonia, to offset the high costs of capture operations. Refineries located near coastal areas with ports facilitate the transport of CO2 from these areas to offshore storage sites. In addition, if different CO2 sources are located in close proximity, they can share both CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, thus benefiting significantly from economies of scale.

One of he issues of the the agriculture sector are not all connected to CO2 emmision: - Methane emmision from livestock (cow) - worse than CO2 emmision

H2 is playing an increasingly important role in the strategies of European countries wishing to decarbonise key sectors such as transport, industrial processes and domestic heating, with a production target of 530 Mt of H2 by 2050. Therefore, low-carbon H2 or blue H2 will play an important role in H2 deployment, so CCS projects incorporating H2 production through natural gas SMR will gain more popularity. Quest CCS in Canada is one such example, where 4 Mt of CO2 from the SMR process has been captured and safely stored for H2 production.
