How do you overcome resistance to Agile from team members or managers?

One thing I have found helpful is bringing the team into a meeting room and talking about the issue/s in the open and in front of everyone. Listening to everyone and giving an opportunity to vent out any potential issue helps in understanding the root cause. And then brainstorm with everyone to identify solutions and get buy-in from each team member help in setting expectations and clearing out the intention.

De manera que puedan ver en proyectos muy claros y concretos, los beneficios de resolver problemas o crear nuevos productos/servicios con metodologías agile. En una primera instancia puede ser como observadores de un proceso exitoso. En un segundo momento, teniendo mentores de agilidad que les muestren el camino. Y en un tercer momento con coachs que los ayuden a implementar metodologías ágiles en un proceso clave, aunque peque?o, para los resultados de su área. Con ejemplos concretos es más fácil ver los beneficios.

Every team member should understand the role that they are going to play within the team. Creating an atmosphere of accountability within each team member helps in ensuring the team is focused on getting the tasks done within the stipulated time. And if there're any issues in delivery, team members take accountability of when & where the things go north and focus on improvement for the next delivery.

Start by co-creating the Agile vision and goals, ensuring that everyone feels a sense of ownership and alignment with the objectives. Actively solicit feedback and suggestions, and incorporate them into the Agile approach to make it more inclusive and relevant. Provide ongoing training and coaching to build confidence and competence in Agile practices. Delegate authority and responsibility, allowing team members and managers to take charge of their roles within the Agile framework.

To overcome resistance to agile, involve your team actively in the process rather than just telling them about the changes. Demonstrate the benefits of agile practices through real examples and success stories, allowing them to see the positive impact firsthand. I have started to truly believe in this approach - start demonstrating yourself the Agile mindset, implement principles as pilot, showcase the value accrued via such pilots. Show them the industry good practices, case studies, etc in order to get the same implemented across. In some cases, it is also mandatory to be assertive and implement these principles - people are inherently biased to the ways of working that they are NOT open to changes and in such cases, leadership support is to be sought for emphasising the need of such behaviours and principles.

Modeling and reinforcing agile behaviors and practices starts with?setting the org up for success. Here is a very simple continuum to consider:? * Primer - kickoff, understand leader challenges, set the stage for a deeper, workshop conversation * Workshop - bring the right people together, train them in a hands on workshop, let them see the change in action. This sets them up to integrate the change in their day to day.? * Implementation / On-going Coaching - Now they take the next step. They take what they learned and are using it. Advocates, early adopters, and / or Coaches observe, offer feedback, and encouragement. * Group Ownership / Continuous Improvement - In time, they "own" the change as they move from "doing" to "being".

Establishing a systematic process for resolving conflicts is key. One way to do this is by defining "a clean escalation path" as part of the team working agreement. This process must be transparent and unanimously agreed by all team members. In a clean escalation, team members are encouraged to first try to resolve issues among themselves. If they are unable to do so, they involve the team conflict facilitator (Scrum Master). If the issue still cannot be resolved, the SM addresses the conflict further up to the next SME. Throughout the process, the SM ensures transparency, avoids hidden agendas, and facilitates equitable participation, allowing all parties to present their perspectives and contribute to decision-making in an objective way.

Actively engage in conversations about agile methodologies, explaining their backgrounds and highlighting the benefits. Illustrate how agile practices can lead to improved efficiency, adaptability, and team collaboration. Retrospect and build a change backlog together with practitioners and coaches. It is important to ensure that feedback is heard and recognised. Also, bring in objectivity in the goals / guardrails - this will help teams identify for themselves if they are on the right track and course-correct when not.

I love to celebrate and share success stories and lessons learned from the teams I have worked with. One way I track psychological safety is with a tool called reetro.io. It has some great metric measurements to get the temp of globally dispersed teams. From there as a coach I can make some suggestions on where we are at and how we can improve. We also revisit retros and lessons learned. We love to share our success via the intranet, email, local office area postings, and sometimes, competition with other teams...healthy competition ;). When people get recognized publically and rewarded with on-the-spot rewards or kudos, they perform better. Others hear the word, are curious, and want to adopt and adapt.

In my experience, I have seen how demonstrating the effectiveness and the benefits that come along with a successful Agile transformation journey are the best way to dissipate any doubt and resistance among the organization. This can be done in various ways, and personally I always suggest to start the journey with a clear, quantified assesment of the status in which teams operate before starting the transformation. A solid baseline can contain different metrics (always suggest looking at Evidence Based Management principles) and you can benchmark your progresses against it anytime. Also, sharing the actions of continuous improvement and their results are a good way of demonstrating progress!

As a mentor, I emphasize the importance of celebrating success and learning experiences during the fast-paced journey. Showcase your team’s efforts and accomplishments to stakeholders. Use retrospectives and reviews to share valuable insights and information, and foster a culture of growth. Appreciation and recognition are powerful tools to motivate the team to engage in an agile way. By actively participating in these festival programs, we reinforce positive outcomes and create an enabling environment for continued growth and development.

Small regular celebrations are essential. Celebrate birthdays, a cake each week, go out and socialize together, acknowledge little things like one member helping another, reaching small project milestones, etc. Use kanban boards where you also make these little celebrations visible. Talk about them during daily huddles or later retrospectives etc. These actions build a team spirit, feelings of cohesion and camaraderie, and helps teams stick together through thick and thin.

In my experience, sharing success stories, lessons learnt from peer teams or peer organization within the same company helps a lot in reducing resistance as it comes under the same company work culture umbrella. The point it shows is if another org under the same company culture can produce success from the agile transformation, then there is good chance your team also can do it! Managers and team members like to see stats so giving them what they are looking for is a great way to start. However this type of change should be motivated by top level of org as well, by including the transformation and making it success as part of team and individual goals can be great motivation.

Is Agile being forced on people, or have you invited your team to co-create the change you want to implement? An Agile Leader is aware that people do not often resist the change, but instead resist the coercion and force used to implement the change (Esther Derby). No one likes being told what to do. Most appreciate being involved in critical decisions that impact their own futures.

Identify an actual problem, something that everyone agrees is an issue, and solve it with an Agile mindset. Most people won’t do things just because they’re told to. But they will do things that help them do their job and make them more effective. Once you get a win, they’ll be more receptive to other ideas you may have.

One of the best ways to overcome resistance to agile is to not portray yourself as a person with agenda to push agile ways of working. Try to get to know people, understand what is the reason for resistance and then take a moment to evaluate if it has any value in bringing in a change? Once you have done the evaluation, share the same with the people who are resisting the change.

In order to deal with the resistance?from management or team member, we must first establish a connection with people & then find out where they are coming from & whats the reason behind their resistance. Leadership need to communicate the vision & mission behind the change & also its very important to talk about how individual team member will benefit from this change.

For me, trust and patience are vital for effective leadership, especially during change. Trust is the foundation of strong relationships, both in personal and professional settings. As a leader, when you cultivate trust within your team, you create an environment where team members feel safe, valued, and respected. Patience allows leaders to navigate challenges with resilience, understanding that change takes time and not everyone adapts at the same pace. By cultivating trust and exercising patience, leaders create a supportive environment where team members feel empowered to navigate change confidently, fostering resilience and driving sustainable success.
