Having a strong and reliable internet connection is an absolute must if you want to host a live event that smooth experience for your audience. I always recommend being hard-wired to the internet with a ethernet connection and then do an "internet speedtest" to ensure your upload speed meets the minimum requirements minimum (ex. 5-10 mbps) that your 3rd party live streaming program recommends. One extra tip is to also turn off any extra programs you have running that are not needed for your live stream. Freeing up your computer's resources can really help reduce any lag or buffering issues.

As a livestreamer, you're operating similarly to a professional broadcasting studio that always assumes something will go wrong. I recommend having an external webcam as your primary with your smartphone ready to go as a backup. Make sure you have at least two microphone inputs ready to use, whether you're using a wired microphone or bluetooth pods. Anything is better than using your laptop mic, because it'll pick up just about anything even in a super quiet room. This is key because your audience will forgive spotty video as long as they can clearly hear the content. Use a wired ethernet connection whenever possible, but a strong wifi and even a ready-to-go mobile hotspot can ensure you stay live.

One thing I've found helpful is testing equipment AND your broadcast connection several days before the actual event. Sending mock RTMP streams to your YouTube or Facebook is a great way to know that your connection and equipment is set up properly.

Test. Test. And then Test again. Always have some kind of redundancy built into your workflow, and always have a contingency plan for when things go wrong. And they will. Assume that you will be thrown a curve ball! Live production seldom goes 100% to plan and so the more you do it the more you realise that it's part and parcel of the technical side of live streaming. But if you have tested everything thoroughly you can minimise the technical gremlins raising their ugly heads. If you are working in a location you don't know, make sure you have a router before your network switch so that you can control DHCP on your network. Test that you can send out an RTMP in advance of your broadcast and if possible be sure to have backup ISP on site.

Production planning and testing go hand in hand with live streaming. This should include a site visit to the location, testing of network connection and backup network connection. Draw a diagram of all the cable connections that you require from camera to encode / platform delivery. Be sure to schedule rehearsals and you can pre-record critical elements of the content in order to give yourself less to do on the day. Do not neglect your audience and how they will feel included in the stream, if they are integrated then they will stay. You want to concentrate on audience retention within your planning and make them central to the whole process.

Top tip for audience interaction: Use an iPad for your stream presenter and host. Feed them comments from your viewers via a simple Google Doc. When new comments come in they can be copied and pasted into the document. Make sure your host is continuously asking questions of the viewers on the stream. Ask them to fire off emojis if you're on Twitch, send them polls, give away prizes, get them to tweet/IG post pictures with your hashtag. Anything you can do to make sure they feel valued and part of the show.

When possible, I love to read out the names of participants and commenters. There is a special magic in hearing our own names out loud - and can lead to a feeling of connection. Giving space for interactivity via text/comments or calling others to speak on the stage is another fantastic way to give value to the audience.

Live streaming is NOT about being perfect. It's about showing up and being prepared. Life is messy, and it is not unusual for unexpected things to happen during a live event - technical issues, surprising questions, emotional twists, funny moments, etc. I've experienced quite a few surprises myself: + a weird green strip on the bottom half of my screen + package delivery during a live session + police knocking on my door!! Remember the main thing is that your audience understands and aware of surroundings, keeping calm and always having a back up is the key.
