In my experience, besides following best practices, having a well documented Master Data Management (MDM) manual helps to establish a good minimum standard that states which formats to have for which types of data. That should satisfy most needs of the organisation, and should be automatically applied to any new system / data stream. Only rare needs will necessitate a deviation from the MDM manual on specific data.

It’s important to know the differences and nuances of each data format. There are a lot of issues coming from floating point representations between formats, so if you work with such data types you must be aware of the precision and internal representation. Another problem could be related to null representation, and what happen with the column data type if all values are null (check pandas and NaN as an example).
