Water quality indicator can help signifies the indicating factor that contribute to water contamination which could either be physical, chemical and biological. When temperature is the leading indicator that shows that salinity may be included. For salt plumes that indicate high proportion of saline content it can be greatly influenced by temperature and vice-versa.

Water quality is often described by different indicators such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, total dissolved solids, conductivity, suspended sediment, nutrients, metals, hydrocarbons, and industrial chemicals. Water quality is one of the most important factors in aquatic ecosystems and ensuring water is safe for human use. Actions made on land have a major effect on what happens in water-based ecosystems which is why monitoring water quality levels is so important. Water temperature is one of the most important factors affecting water systems. Temperature can affect dissolved oxygen levels, chemical and biological processes, species compositions, water density and stratification, and life-stages in different marine organisms.

Another step to monitor the impact of urbanization on water quality is to compare the measured indicators with the relevant water quality standards or guidelines. These are the values or ranges of values that define the acceptable or desirable levels of water quality for different uses and purposes, such as drinking, irrigation, recreation, or wildlife protection. Water quality standards used for judging the quality of water derived after the treatment process. An evaluation of health risks associated with drinking water is necessary and timely. There are three basic objectives of water treatment, namely, production of water that is safe for human consumption, production of water that is appealing to the customer, and production of water treatment facilities, which can be constructed and operated at a reasonable cost.
