1 Plan and communicate

Before you invite your mentee teacher to observe your lesson, plan ahead and communicate your objectives, methods, and expectations. Explain the rationale behind your choices and how they align with the curriculum, standards, and students' needs. Discuss the learning outcomes, assessment criteria, and feedback strategies you will use. This will help your mentee teacher understand the purpose and structure of your lesson and prepare them to observe and reflect on specific aspects of your teaching.

A lot of this work should be set before students arrive in the fall. This allows the mentee time to process and plan using all applicable frameworks (UDL, CRT, et. Al.) Later in the school year, it’s key to find moments to communicate progress and collect student data in order to frame future conversations and planning. This can look like assessment data, formative data, classroom quick-checks, and student self-identification (we love a KWL chart!).

In addition to discussing the learning outcomes, assessment criteria, and feedback strategies you will use, consider asking your mentee teacher to take observational notes during the lesson, paying particular attention to how particular subgroups of students are responding, such as student with IEPs or multilingual learners. This could be really powerful data to pull into the debrief conversation and also begin to sharpen your mentees ability to connect the effectiveness of particular strategies with specific subgroups of students.

2 Demonstrate and explain

During your lesson, demonstrate and explain the teaching strategies you are using and how they support student learning. For example, you can model how to use questioning techniques, differentiation, scaffolding, cooperative learning, or classroom management strategies. You can also use think-alouds, self-talk, or metacognitive prompts to make your thinking and decision-making visible and explicit. This will help your mentee teacher see how you apply your knowledge and skills in practice and how you adapt to different situations and challenges.

I was working with a new teacher recently and encouraged her to also poll students at the end of the lesson to get their feedback on which teaching strategy supported their learning best. For middle school and high school students, this is a great way to help them understand what works for them as learners and this is also incredible data for teachers to use to inform their future actions!

3 Debrief and discuss

After your lesson, debrief and discuss with your mentee teacher what they observed and learned. Invite them to share their feedback, questions, insights, and reflections. Use open-ended and probing questions to guide them to identify the strengths and areas for improvement of your teaching and their own. Encourage them to connect their observations to their own goals, experiences, and challenges. Provide them with constructive and specific suggestions on how they can implement or improve the teaching strategies they observed in their own classroom.

4 Observe and support

When your mentee teacher tries out the teaching strategies you modeled in their own classroom, observe and support them. Monitor and document their achievements and challenges. Provide them with ongoing support, encouragement, and resources. Recognize and acknowledge their efforts and improvements. Model a growth mindset and a lifelong learning attitude.
