How do you measure user satisfaction with data?

I’d suggest starting with qualitative research to understand how people are using your product, where they’re running into problems, where they are satisfied or even delighted with the experience, etc. This should give you a better starting point for coming up with right survey questions to measure what matters.

There are a number of ways to measure user satisfaction with data, such as surveys, usability testing, customer support data, product analytics, and social media monitoring. Here is one of the formats I use to get quick learnings from users/visitors: 1. Why did you come to xxxx? 2. Were you able to do what you came here for? 3. If no, why were you unable to/what impacted your decision? 4. If yes, how would you rate you experience… on a scale of…? 5. High score: Great! Could you share what you enjoyed about your experience? 6. Mid to low: I’m sorry that you did not have x experience. We are always looking to improve. Could you please share what made your experience less than xx? 7. optional: information to follow up on responses. Personalize Ending based on responses: Thank you for your time, enjoy xX% off Y.

As much as people like being asked questions in person, it doesn't always translate online. Make sure to keep your questions small and self-contained. If it's not yes or no, is the grading scale readily apparent? Lastly, use freeform sparingly and make sure prompts take on the bulk of mental heavy lifting for your users.

Surveys/questionnaires can be a great way to get a lot of data from a large sample without requiring too much effort. If you are running unmoderated research with an online tool like dscout or Usertesting.com...try implementing some of your survey questions into your screener. This can be a great way to identify some baseline user satisfaction metrics for products that are similar to yours!

Quantitative methods are great for framing an issue but they may fail to tell you how to fix it - that's where your qualitative research methods will come in hand! Interviews and focus groups are great qualitative methods that can help paint the picture of the issues impacting your product and may also tell you how to fix them. Since they take more effort to stand up, it's important to make sure you execute them correctly. Regardless of your interview techniques, make sure that you have a well-thought-out moderator's guide with plenty of probing questions. Having this guide can help when participants have trouble sharing their thoughts/experiences and can also help keep your research sessions on track.

One thing I have found useful is to sample the user base and get thier feedback directly. Questionnaire should be written to evoke answer which are actionable, look for verbs, usability related comments and action on them. I would not look for perfection from day one, but always keep your door and ears open for feedback and respond back with all honesty. As long an user knows that you are someone who is constantly on the improving trajectory they will provide honest feedback

Any user, can provide valuable insights on whether the product works well. In fact, designing a product exclusively for domain experts can limit its accessibility and potential audience.

Ratings, in my opinion, serve as a highly effective metric for gauging a product's performance. What sets ratings apart is their diversity. Take, for example, the ratings pouring in from platforms like the Play Store or App Store; they encompass user feedback on a wide spectrum of issues, from complaints to compliments. It's remarkable how a product can receive a 1-star rating due to something as specific as a server hiccup, unclear button text, an unexpected logout, or a delayed order delivery. Ratings, if utilised right, provide a comprehensive view of the product, offering insights that can be leveraged for improvements across the board—ranging from design and development to service enhancements.

Physiological data can be hard to obtain and is often collected in ways that can be considered invasive and could introduce bias into the data you are collecting. Before making the decision to collect physiological data consider whether it's worth the investment..you may find that other methods are a more viable way of understanding user satisfaction. If you have stakeholders who are insistent on using such measures - identify some additional research questions that can support the rationale for it!
