1 Code quality

Increasingly, I see code quality as having two axes: behavior and structure. Behavior is what the program does. Structure is how it's organized. Of the two, behavior is easier to measure through methods like manual QA, unit/integration tests, and usability testing. Measuring structure is trickier, but ultimately comes down to two things: evaluating architecture and the implementation. Judging the quality of an architecture requires deep experience, and is best handled through peer review. Tools like static analysis are helpful for measuring implementations, and LLMs hold a lot of promise.

Another important aspect of a software engineer's performance is the business value they deliver to the organization and the customers. Business value can be defined by the alignment of the software product with the business goals, requirements, and expectations. The industry tends to over complicate the business value of software, mostly due to the lack of clarity around desired outcomes. If the business goals are fuzzy, measuring the contributions by the software function will be fuzzy. The best organizations test their ideas before writing a single line of code. These groups can describe the quantifiable value of a new business, product or feature. Once justified, the software team can be measured on how quickly, safely and cost effectively an idea is implemented. Decoupling the business outcome from the delivery quality puts the right emphasis on the different parts of the organization.

Personal growth can be demonstrated by the acquisition of new skills, knowledge, and competencies that enhance their professional capabilities and potential. A recent college graduate might want to focus on hard skill development, while a seasoned principal engineer might focus on mentorship and communication. In my experience, the best growth programs blend the needs of a business with the goals of the software engineer. This leads to more motivated employees. How well the software engineer is able to convert or visualise the technical feasibility of requirements. For me if an IT engineer especially a developer is able to build or visualise the entire thing as the requirement goes in his/her head, though rough.... The performance seems to be brilliant.

Code quality and Best practices are fundamental to a developer however what makes a developer outstanding is, imo, is how good he/she is in sharing skills and best practices and helping the team members when and as often needed. participate and shares techinical nuances while considering business need and implementing the same so that right choices are made for design of solution.
