It is important to identify and focus on the critical equipments for monitoring the performance. Having KPI for each and every piece of kit may produce a full spectrum of information but it may cause us to overlook at the issues which are affecting the critical kits.

Consider your objectives, challenges, and opportunities in manufacturing operations, as well as the data availability, accuracy, and relevance for each MPI. Generally speaking, MPIs should be aligned with strategic goals and priorities, relevant and meaningful to operations and stakeholders, measurable and verifiable with reliable data sources, actionable and controllable by your maintenance team, and balanced and comprehensive covering different maintenance aspects.

Continuous feedback and adjustment are essential for sustainable improvement. -Communication: Ensure effective communication between maintenance teams, management and relevant stakeholders. 5 What are some examples of MPIs?

In manufacturing operations, there are a variety of MPIs that can be used. The most common ones include overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to repair (MTTR), maintenance cost per unit (MCPU), and maintenance backlog. OEE is calculated by multiplying the availability rate, the performance rate, and the quality rate of the equipment. MTBF is derived by dividing the total operating time of the equipment by the number of failures that occurred during that time. MTTR is obtained by dividing the total downtime of the equipment by the number of failures that occurred during that time. MCPU is calculated by dividing the total maintenance cost by the total output. Lastly, maintenance backlog is determined by adding up the estimated hours of all the maintenance tasks that are not completed yet.
