1 Define your goals and indicators

Before you start your EIA, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and how you will measure it. What are your environmental objectives and targets? What are the key performance indicators (KPIs) that will show you if you are meeting them? How will you collect and analyze the data to track your progress and performance? Having a well-defined framework of goals and indicators will help you design your EIA, monitor your impacts, and evaluate your outcomes.

To make better decisions about where to focus their environmental efforts, companies need to understand the environmental impact of their products throughout their entire life cycle, from the sourcing and manufacturing of the raw materials to the use and disposal of the product. To gain a comprehensive view of a product's environmental impact across its life cycle, companies should assess four factors: CLIMATE IMPACT; NATURAL RESOURCE USAGE; ECOSYSTEM CHANGES; POLLUTION.

In my experience EIA's are often used to inform stakeholders to help them understand the potential effects of a proposed intervention before it begins. Impact Assessment?in general is a process for determining and addressing needs, or “gaps” between current conditions and desired conditions.? To identify objectives and targets, a context analysis and screening of relevant environmental matters are essential. Sources for the identification of relevant matters are regulations and standards, stakeholder engagement activities (ref. step 4) and the Science based targets initiative.

2 Use a life cycle approach

Your EIA should not only focus on the immediate or short-term impacts of your project or policy, but also on the long-term and cumulative effects that may arise over the entire life cycle of your activity. This means considering the environmental impacts of your inputs, outputs, processes, and disposal, as well as the interactions and feedbacks between them. A life cycle approach will help you identify the sources, pathways, and receptors of your impacts, and the opportunities and risks for mitigation and adaptation.

3 Apply the principle of proportionality

Your EIA should be proportionate to the scale, nature, and significance of your environmental impacts. This means that you should use the appropriate level of detail, rigor, and complexity for your assessment, depending on the context and the stakeholders involved. You should also balance the costs and benefits of your EIA, and avoid over- or under-assessing your impacts. Applying the principle of proportionality will help you optimize your resources, time, and quality of your EIA.

In my experience the application of the proportionality is increasingly being influenced by ESG reporting standards, for example the EU Taxonomy regulation and CSRD ESRSs. Especially for projects or initiatives which require a material financial investment, for which ESG criteria are becoming increasingly important.

4 Engage with stakeholders

Your EIA should not be a one-way or isolated process, but a collaborative and participatory one. You should engage with the relevant stakeholders, such as regulators, communities, customers, suppliers, and investors, throughout your EIA. You should communicate your goals, methods, results, and actions clearly and transparently, and solicit their feedback and input. You should also address their concerns, expectations, and suggestions, and incorporate them into your decision-making and management. Engaging with stakeholders will help you improve your credibility, accountability, and legitimacy of your EIA.

Involving stakeholders in the preparation of EIA documents not only improves the accuracy and credibility of the assessment but also: 1. Enhanced decision making to allows a more comprehensive assessment. 2. Early identification of potential issues as stakeholders may offer insights regarding sensitive environmental areas, cultural heritage sites, or other relevant factors that could impact project design or location. 3.Transparency, trust, and further to increase a project acceptance. When considering the community impacted by a project, absolutely completing an EIA with a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) is essential. Here are some reasons: 1. 5 Review and update your EIA

Your EIA should not be a static or final document, but a dynamic and iterative one. You should review and update your EIA regularly, especially when there are changes in your project or policy, or in the environmental conditions or regulations. You should also evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of your EIA, and identify the gaps, challenges, and lessons learned. You should use the feedback and data from your monitoring and evaluation to improve your EIA practice and performance, and to inform your future actions and strategies.
