All too often, data analysts are asked to build a dashboard, create a report, or "just grab" some data. Analysts need to avoid the inclination to be a "data waiter" and just deliver what was asked for. Rather, analysts should be data consultants and first uncover the WHY of the ask. What problem are you solving? The answer to that question will guide your success metrics. There should be one primary metric that measures the success of the project, based exclusively on the WHY of the ask. You want the dashboard to increase sales? Which sales? How? Let's measure those sales over time and evaluate the dashboard's effectiveness. Now you have a clear objective with a quantifiable way to measure success. Be a Data Consultant, not a waiter.

Defining the final objective and breaking it down by KPIs is an absolute must. In many cases, analysts appear to be profoundly technical but lack the functional knowledge which becomes an obstacle to meeting the end goal. The points made here seem like activities one would obviously perform. However, these are exactly the items which get missed due to deadline pressures or other reasons of oversight. Performing a gap analysis between expected and actual results is extremely crucial. As is presenting the data in an effective manner. Too often proof-reading is rushed, leading to observable inaccuracies or the data being visually unappealing - points necessary to get the senior management's approval!

We compare the effect to a defined control group, who will not see any changes. As we get results from the work, be it insights or recommendations, the actions need to be undertaken. Keeping the stakeholder interest alive is a crucial element to project's success. It is also necessary to assume first or the second implementation of the actions may not immediately bear fruit, thus measurement doctrine, agility and actionability needs to be adapted -- this is especially true for any high impact project. Articulation of business impact, that story needs to be narrated to reenforce that the project has been successful and what the next logical steps should be.

Make sure the person using the data analysis understood it entirely as I have seen bad decisions made on the basis of someone 'interpreting' the data incorrectly.
