The huge volume of material that students have access to means that often they are just cutting and pasting slabs of information - rather than reflecting and analysing the content matter. The senior years have also had an explosion of students exploiting external tutoring and other's writing their assessment work. many students have come to expect extensive and multiple drafting - asking constantly what do I need to do to make it an A+. If you have to be told what to do - you are not an A+ student. Students now seem to need so much more scaffolding and support to get on track - independence and self initiative are rare and special qualities. Plus IAchat shortcuts!

If you are grading NCEA (NZ Curriculum), it is important to use the appropriate terminology for the grade. You might be use to saying things are excellent, good and great, however this can be confusing for students and it only provides a compliment. The idea of feedback is to provide our students with goals and let them know where they are sitting within the national standard and also where they are headed (indivdual goals). So try use the wording for the appropriate level of their work. For example: - An excellence level can include words such as perceptive, imaginative, insightful, convincing, and captivating. - A merit can include words such as skillful, controlled, and sustained.
