Managing time effectively during a test is key to high performance. This is something I came to realize when I had to study for Step 1, which was a notoriously difficult 8 hour exam. The score from Step 1 would essentially determine not only which specialty of medicine I could enter, but also which residencies within the specialty would even grant me an interview. The first thing I recommend when taking a reasoning test is to understand the format. Know at least these 4 main things: duration of exam, number of questions, subjects covered, and the types of questions, ie multiple choice or true or false, et cetera. From there, you develop a strategy to ensure your success.

The first thing you must do for a test is understand the format, which includes duration and number of questions. Once you know the number of questions, you can calculate how many minutes you have per question. From there, run some practice tests and see how long you take with each question. If you are too slow, then you must practice being faster. But be careful, with speed comes errors! You still need to maintain your accuracy while you learn to answer questions quickly. Now that you know the speed at which you must take the exam, be sure to skip questions that are taking too much of your time. There is a higher probability with those questions that you will answer incorrectly. You may always return at the end of the section to answer.

Reviewing answers is up to personal preference. I have found that if I review my answers, I cannot resist to the temptation to change answers. And a lot of times, I change the right answer to a wrong one. So it's my recommendation to keep your answer the same. Only review questions that you have flagged because you were stumped or needed more time to figure out.
