How do you manage talent across generations?

Effective talent management requires adaptability, inclusive leadership & commitment to continuous learning. Customizing engagement strategies to meet the specific motivations of each cohort - be it the quest for meaningful work or the desire for recognition and stability - ensures that every individual feels valued and invested in. Bridging generations is not just about mitigating challenges but also about capitalising on the experiences, perspectives, and skills, thereby creating a dynamic and resilient workforce poised for the future. The key to success lies in fostering mutual respect, where diverse perspectives are celebrated and leveraged to drive innovation and organizational growth.

Recognizing that people are individuals and not defined by their generation. It is oversimplification to identify employees by "20 year span in which they were born." Rather we use other tools to identify employee needs, motivation and other metrics. Ultimately treating people well, valuing them and supporting them is key to every piece of talent management.

This can be done by fostering a collaborative culture with cross-generational mentorship including reverse mentorship, encouraging knowledge-sharing, and creating flexible career paths to accommodate varied goals

I truly believe that respecting generational differences is key to fostering a harmonious workplace. Each generation brings its own set of values, experiences, and work styles. By acknowledging and valuing these differences, we can build a culture of mutual respect and inclusivity, which enhances overall productivity and employee satisfaction.

Every generation but also everybody. Honestly I don't share a lot of values of my own generation so not sure it's at all related but I would really try to hone in that skill that allows you to decipher what makes people tick.

Tailoring development initiatives to different age groups is also a must. And, of course, effective communication remains the key to success. Beyond the necessities, when you have a common purpose, a common goal, it's easier to add the best of your generation.

Encourage everyone to check in on their own biases and learn from different perspectives in order to shift the team work to a skills & strengths based approach and not just output with a one-size-fits-all way of working. Humour will save the day most times when people can openly note their differences without trying to be right. Generational definitions of success and job purpose will differ also and worth noting, without impacting the value of working towards shared goals and allow everyone to still value different things and have different personal priorities. Nothing new yet worth repeating, when leadership role models inclusion, teams and culture follow!

At my company, we’ve noticed that younger folks, like millennials and Gen Z, really love remote work. They want a good work-life balance, freedom, and the ability to work from anywhere. Understanding this helps us meet their needs and keep them happy!

Slightly controversial... Consider not playing into the stereotypes. I think that one of the biggest challenges currently facing the Multi-Generational Workforce is the prevailing thought that because you are x generation, you WILL be y. Let's remember that stereotyping is just that and that we should get to know the individual rather than making assumptions on their age.

I believe all of the above can be true while also acknowledging that you cannot be everything to everyone. Also, you must be hesitant to assume everyone within a given generation is the same. My best advice would be to define your identity, process, operation, standards and way of doing things. Be transparent and consistent with these things and find people who want those same things.

When managing talent across generations, I’ve found it’s helpful to suspend any assumptions. Age is nothing but a number. Learned first-hand experience and brilliant ideas can come from people of any age. When you manage with an open mind and a growth mindset, people will pleasantly surprise you.
