How do you manage structural risks and uncertainties in your projects?

It's a team effort. Communicate the predicted risks (structural deflections, minimum safety factors, service life, instabilities during construction, etc.) to the design team, owner, and construction team (as appropriate). "What level of service do you want?" Get input from that entire team and the communicate your engineering decision back to the team (as appropriate, and all in writing). Avoid the thinking trap that the structure will be what your calculations or computer model say it will be.

In order to effectively manage risks in a project, it is important to identify potential risks at each stage, with the help of the project team, company experience, and industry experts. Categorizing risk sources is a useful method for identifying potential risks. Once risks are identified, they should be included in a risk monitoring model and prioritized based on their severity. A risk management plan should then be created to outline the potential negative and positive impacts of the risks on the project, along with the necessary measures to manage and mitigate them.

First step to manage the structural risks is; to establish risk management policy, implement a solid culture among the construction& design teams, this is based on the mutual collaboration, on the early stage of the project, from now on, it continues the process to; identify, mitigate, control, and monitor the risk associated with any construction operation/task/action, but, this requires a commitment and continuous effort to follow up and maintain: the procedure, cherish the engagement, and empower the teams through coaching/training.

Many facets of mitigation, not the least of which are (1) know the building codes and how to apply the principles, (2) invest in and seek out advice from senior engineers... you're not the first person to be challenged with new problems, and (3) codes represent MINIMUM standards... err on the side of good judgment.

It is important to communicate risks to clients in a way that is understood. The code intentionally focuses on "life-safety" due to control building costs. ASCE 7 title is "MINIMUM" Design Loads. Most commercial / industrial structures are categorized as Risk Category II, because of the lack of lifesafety risks but property damages could be expensive. Even if Insurance covers this, it is unlikely to cover consequential damages from the facility's downtime. Example: 1. Post office: time-sensitive documents could be lost because of a structural failure 2. Data Centers are of course an obvious example too, where property damage alone can easily offset additional structure cost to avoid the damage, not to mention downtime damages.

Structural engineering is as much an art as it is a science if not more. Risk is addressed not by over design (added $$), but through understanding all aspects of each project you are involved with in great detail and delivering a set of construction documents that is coordinated, complete and well detailed; meets the intent and requirements of the building code; has a fully addressed load path; and is constructable ! If these boxes are checked you have ultimately minimized your risk and will sleep well at night :)
