How do you manage social work supervision?

Promote Ethical Practice Remember that effective social work supervision is a collaborative process that supports the growth and well-being of the social worker while ultimately benefiting the clients they serve.

Preparation is key. Start by identifying specific topics that you want to discuss. Use your time in supervision to also identify areas that you want to build on and use this as an opportunity to learn from your supervisor. This can also be a way to gain support.

It is important to hold a space for supervision that does not only focus on client outcomes. Reflect on the period since the last supervision and identify stressful moments that may require unpacking, as well as, strategies that you employed to support you overcome.

Without adequate preparation, it is all too easy to work on symptoms, not on root-causes of presented challenges. When I managed a team of home-visiting social workers, I encouraged everybody to have a clear agenda before going to see a client. As a way to check, I offered 'when you grab those car keys to head out, ask yourself whether you are clear on what it is you are working on with that client today.' Else it is very easy to arrive, talk for an hour or two about what's 'on top' and leave, only to return to doing the same the next week, without creating real, sustainable insights and change. In my view, the same applies to supervision! Preparation ensures time together is well used for maximum benefit and insight.

This is a huge one many students in field miss. It is okay to admit when you dont know something! This is the space to truly be honest and talk about the things coming up in your head. I think often students try to use this space to show off or are afraid to identify bias that has surfaced. Trusting your supervisor is important and really one of the best ways to truly grow in your skills!

The initial priority in establishment of the supervisory relationship, within which there is an alliance of safety, mutual respect, trust, and a climate of consistency and predictability in delivery of feedback and support is firmly rooted in prioritizing the scared space where clinicians can securely seek guidance, support, and experiential learning that creates the confidence necessary to explore professional use of self towards meaningful clinical growth.

Without trust in the process and the relationship with your supervisor, you won't be able to go deep on some of the most difficult situations in social work, like those, where you need to reflect on your own experiences and challenges that may cause you to (re)act to a client or situation you are dealing with. It is vital in ensuring a useful and healthy reflection space.

Create a question you ask everytime, something similar to below- What have I done well and what can I do better? What should I stop doing and what should I start doing?

Sometimes the growth is in the rub, the conversations that are uncomfortable and push us to shed some old beliefs and views in order to rebuild better and stronger. Other times the healing is in unconditional support and acceptance, when we are our own worst critics and someone comes along and says 'it's okay to feel that way' or 'you did the best you could'. The balance between both is vital.

Dont be afraid to show how you have grown! Being able to take the time and restate a previous area of growth and "brag" a little on what you have done to work on it shows your ability to learn and strive!

Also, give yourself grace if the above examples are hard to impliment at first. It takes skill and confidence to navigate relationships, particularly when there is a power differential. Practice and be kind to yourself.
