In my opinion there a three most important points for assessing the current state: 1. Gap analysis: Conduct a thorough gap analysis to identify disparities between your existing security practices and recognized cybersecurity frameworks or industry best practices. This helps pinpoint immediate areas of improvement. 2. Risk assessment: Perform a comprehensive risk assessment to prioritize security risks based on their potential impact and likelihood. Understanding the impact of innovations when you think about mitigation. 3. Continuous improvement: Recognize that security is an ongoing process. Establish mechanisms for continuous monitoring, evaluation, and improvement of your security posture. Where could you improve, automate, ...?

The core concepts of cybersecurity hasn't changed in decades. Technical remediations change rapidly, as technology advances, but the underlying concepts remain the same. Regular communication of enterprise needs, combined with ongoing awareness of IT implementations, allows for agile solutions to address the finite pieces of security that address the overall security needs in a fluid manner.

Defining the problem is pivotal when leveraging AI. This involves delineating the current situation, desired outcome, and identifying the gap between them. Key metrics and indicators should be established to measure both the problem and solution effectively. It is essential to understand how the issue aligns with strategic goals and priorities. There are already good points mentioned like performing a GAP Analysis and refering to frameworks to identify the current state. I would like to add eganging with business stakeholders to ensure alignment with the business developments. If you introduce innovation in security you affect the business and their upcoming new (innovation) projects.

The goals of the innovation projects need to be linked to reduce business risk or support the business strategy - in reality it is usually the first one. To prioritize the projects I would use the risk reduction impact a innovation project has.
