This is what I did when I was starting out: Locate a few projects at my company that interests me (ideally something big). Backchannel some info and find the architect. Pick one and get to work: Make and document assumptions & design a solution; build a PoC? Treat this seriously. You're probably wrong--it's okay. Once I'm done, I'd reach out to the architect & politely ask for a short coffee chat, talk about the project, maybe critique my solution? Be flexible & respectful. With some luck, they might say yes! Most of the time, it won't work out -- the colleague has left, confidentiality, time constraints, etc. And that's absolutely okay. But the rare few times it does work out, this is so incredibly rewarding. I've been lucky.
