User journey maps are an effective way to visually represent research insights. In my experience, involving stakeholders and users in creating the map has proven beneficial. I typically conduct an interactive workshop where participants can contribute their knowledge and experience to map out the persona's journey based on a specific scenario. It is essential to select a collaborative tool that allows me to moderate the session and communicate in real-time. For example, I will be looking to specific functionality offering such as a timer, video conference, sticky notes, etc. Before choosing your platform, make sure to evaluate HOW you will be mapping the user journey and know which functionalities you will need.

Mastering good tools is great, but you can’t always guarantee the places you work for will allow you access to them. Instead, it’s better to learn how to organise and wrangle the information you collect in a logical way that makes it easy to spot patterns and opportunities. If you can learn to do this with a Sharpie and a stack of paper Post-it’s (or even squares on a PowerPoint slide) then, you’ll be in your element by the time it comes to a fancy Miro board. In fact, doing this without the luxury of an infinite digital canvas can force you to learn to work lean. The fundamentals of good journey mapping aren’t about mastering fancy software, they’re about gathering good data to start with and then learning to filter out the noise.

Avoid the number one mistake when learning a tool: - Learn everything about it. - Practice what you learned. Instead only learn the techniques that you need for the moment and iterate. Short learning/practice loops will exponentially increase your learning curve!
