How do you learn from your maintenance feedback?

Maintenance is an art that should be in place according to gathered machinery condition monitoring data, in manufacturing plant, real time analysis about the current operating data and machines condition monitoring will reduce 70% of the unplanned downtime, in my experience physical monitoring by well versed technicians/ machine operators able to identify actual problems, with a proper mentoring/ maintenance training programs, evidence on maintenance will be recorded in scheduled maintenance checklist. There is 3 basic fundamentals to identify health of machinery prior to maintenance by condition monitoring which is on pipeline pressure, machine temperature and lubricants condition. Continuous monitoring on this will arrest most of problems

In my opinion, Maintenance is doctor of machine. The way you trust your doctor to maintain your health, similarly maintenance feedback need to be trusted like a machine doctor. They are the most knowledgeable on machine in terms of its technicality, its behavior. If maintenance team is only involved in attending breakdowns without giving importance to preventive/predictive measures, then that's not an efficient department. Maintenance dept should improve their reliability by improving the results and reducing the maint cost thus supporting the revenue growth. Name to be gained. Rootcause analysis should be in place for every behavior shown by machines. Thus, their Feedback would be automatically trusted, seeing their approach.

Feedback given back to any maintenance programs from those operating equipment is very critical to determine the effectiveness of a maintenance strategy. Maintainers can rely on data points to determine elevating trends in wear debris and particle counts by routinely taking oil samples from oil compartments for example but those data points can’t provide important operational characteristics like an operator can in terms of machine performance nuances like slower travel speeds than “like equipment” in the fleet under the same conditions. You may get consistent cycle times for implement operations and within OEM specifications but only operators can help determine when there is something “off” or slow when under operational loads

Maintenance feedback is useful only if analysed appropriately by the shore support team. The analysis to be done has to be include machinery /equipment makers. More impontly, is to review the feedback/considering the operation pattern of the vessel, and especially in ship specific type operations, The review of the feedback requires reviewing the makers set maintenance frequency, and maintenance scope. Also Review of history maintenance taking in account the equipment operating conditions suitable, Operating temperatures, any loads on some units more than others, Is observed condion output parameters within Nox/Sox? Can efficiency be improved, and ensuring that equipment reliable. Adopt the rule: Improved maintenance = higher safrty

As the old philosophy tells us, if it can't be measured, it can't be improved. A big mistake in maintenance is to work with feelings. Feelings that everything is fine, feelings that the machine is working well... Having ways to measure performance is essential to raising the quality level of any maintenance team. It is also necessary to know what measurements to take, otherwise it becomes a waste of time.

Not only positive data is useful. Positive and negative data is important for lessons for future actioning. So when collecting data nothing should be left. Documentation is very important as it provides a point of reference

It is also very key to analyze feedbacks based on historical data. A trend is very vital before action plans can be taken. This usually gives a permanent solution to root causes

Usually there should be an improvement every time we use data collected previously. Whether negative or positive data, when used on the next maintenance, it should improve efficiency.

Yes, receive feedback. Consider no data or information or observations from others as negative but rather only as data or information otherwise you may take offense and be hindered in learning or progression.

Continual improvement is important. Our world is evolving and becoming more dynamic. We should be improving and moving with it. If we don't do that, we become obsolete. This is why customer, stakeholder, peer and colleagues' feedback is important.

Maintenance feedback promotes continuous improvement. Based on the feedback received from the maintenance technicians against the work orders, the planner updates/modifies the maintenance plan in the job plan library. Feedback from the technicians also helps modify/add/delete tasks in Preventive Maintenance plans.

Feedback can be a useful tool, if collated and analyzed for Performance against efficiency and Operating Cost; for comparison and bench marking expected operational parameters against OEM specification and Standards. Action items (from feed-back reports) is a resource for preventing imminent equipment breakdown and also assessing the effectiveness of certain types of Maintenance Procedures and frequency. Such feedback would reduce the frequency of breakdown Costs and down time for corrective repairs. In the short term, maintenance feedback is a source of information on the status of equipment, and, in the long term, is a useful resource tool for continuous improvement - if acted on.
