How do you learn from design trade-offs and improve your design process?

As designers, it's important for us to reassess our research and inputs to ensure our projects are on the right track. Striking a balance between incorporating our own design philosophy and not overshadowing the outcome with personal desires can be hard. From my point of view, good industrial design should help and satisfy users without causing friction. Therefore, we must tread carefully as designers to create natural, beautiful products with just the right amount of personality. Regularly revisit design decisions as a team to ensure alignment and optimize future processes based on learned experiences.

The most successful design projects we have worked on at Vital have had a central collaboration framework consisting of RASIC, Project charter and an outline mission. Without these things many projects stumble, lose focus or confuse partners. As the automotive projects we wok on have grown, these outline documents have become central to our process.

At Vital we strongly believe that prototyping is part of the design journey and not a result of it. Over the past few years we have witnessed more and more desktop based approaches hitting fundamental issues when initially deployed or tested. We find that building prototypes faster or even to a lower quicker resolution means that many pitfalls can be avoided.

Embracing adaptability, openness to change, and a commitment to ongoing improvement contribute to refining the design process and achieving better outcomes.

In our studio we try to find time to reflect on projects both commercially and from a design impact point of view. Without doing this it feels like you have to start from the beginning on every job with the potential to repeat any costly issues or mistakes. Celebrating failure is hard but knowing what to avoid is as beneficial as knowing what to aim for.
