Interest is key when learning any technical skill. IT is hard, really, really hard. Many of us forget how difficult it really is for those outside of our domains. I've found that getting over the hard part of any IT skill is having a real desire to learn something. If it resonates with you, it will make it easier to pursue the skills needed. This is why it's good to stay at least somewhat in the loop of what's going on in tech. Because taking a weekend or longer to play with a new toy is how we build skills without making it work. PLAYING with a new language sounds a lot more fun than LEARNING a new language(or framework, technology, etc.). The two almost always are the same thing in practice, but are completely different in your head.

Another reason to learn a new programming language is to work on your current and future projects. Maybe you have an idea for an app, a website, or a tool that requires a specific language or framework. Maybe you have an existing project that needs to be updated, refactored, or extended with a new feature or functionality. I've found this to be the least compelling reason to pursue a new skill, at least on the surface. If this was the driving force, almost all of us would know COBAL. It's a high demand skill, with a lot of money given to those that know it. Yet I'm yet to meet a COBAL developer under the age of 50. If you want to learn to increase your job prospects, I'd recommend that you: A) Find some way to make it fun, or a challenge. B) Don't bother, as most of the time having good programing fundamentals is more important. In my most recent job I learned React because it was what the company was using, but this happened AFTER I got the position, and I was able to do it because I had good programing fundamentals, and base understanding of JavaScript.

Honestly, most languages (with a few esoteric rare exceptions) have plenty of resources available for those that have enough interest. I've found that chasing what interests you is the best way to learn. Personally I learned C# because that's what Unity used, and it's lead me down a career path that so far I'd call a success. Really I think it's best to just pick a project and get to work. Whatever it takes won't be a waste as long as you're enjoying the journey, and you're practicing/learning fundamental skills. I once spent a week learning LISP. Did it help me get a job? No. Did it help me be a better programmer? 100%. Chase what's interesting, and try and stretch yourself, and you'll do fine.
