How do you keep your typography fresh in web design?

The practice I tend to follow is to use serif fonts for headlines and sans serif for body copy. Serifs look nice on large font, but they make body copy harder to read.

It's also important to keep accessibility in mind when choosing your website fonts. Fonts that impact accessibility essentially make the content harder to read. This includes making it difficult to distinguish between the shape of different letters, overlapping characters, and having unnecessary decorative features.

When it comes to picking fonts for my web design clients, it's all about strategy. 1?? I have to consider your brand. Is it more laid-back or quite formal? Bold or reserved? The font needs to vibe with your brand's personality. 2?? I can't forget about readability. Keeping visitors on your site= a font that's easy on the eyes. 3?? Gotta think about your audience. Who's gonna be visiting your site? Older demographics might lean towards more traditional, larger fonts, while a younger crowd might be drawn to something contemporary. 4?? Variety. A couple of complementary fonts can really make your site pop. A solid approach? → one font for headers, → one for body text. But don't go overboard - too many fonts can be overwhelming. ??

One piece of advice I've always stuck by is to skip a weight. If the typeface has Thin, Book, Regular, Bold, Black, and you use Regular, you should use thin or black alongside it for improved contrast.

1?? Hierarchy is about clarity. I use it to show what's most important on a page. I use size, color, and positioning to make the key messages pop. Your visitors should know, just at a glance, where to focus their attention. 2?? Alignment is about balance. When elements on your site are aligned, it's not just visually pleasing - it also makes it easier for visitors to navigate and digest the information. And trust me, it's not just about sticking to the grid. Yes, alignment often means keeping things tidy, but sometimes, breaking the rules can bring a unique energy to your site. The big goal? ???? To guide your visitors through your site, from the first impression right down to the call-to-action.

I like to use Fluid Typography in all my projects. I use CSS and clamp to assign fluid sizes to my headings, automatically adjusting not just to breakpoints (as with media queries) but constantly to all different windows widths.

I like to start with a very standard and unobtrusive font first before getting experimental. This is my "independent variable" Then I like to use tools like Dribble, Pinterest and graphic designers I follow on Twitter for inspiration and options for dependent variables. One caveat is to limit your typography sample size. It's very easy to 'lose the forest for the trees.' After experimenting, you should know one that feels good to your eye but always bring in external opinions to challenge your design eye.

Pairing typography to the brand identity is foundational to a great experience. When revisiting your brand’s typography, start by assessing if it’s paired to the brand identity. Adjust accordingly.

Things change quickly, especially these days so, I make a habit of: 1?? Browsing new designs: Check out websites, magazines, and even public signage. 2?? Connecting with the design community: Participating in design forums, attending webinars, and following influential designers on social media. 3?? Experiment with different styles: Trying out new typefaces, messing around with kerning and leading. 4?? Staying updated with technology: As the design tools evolve, they introduce new capabilities. So, don't sleep on any software updates or new applications hitting the scene. They just might give you an edge. ??

Be consistent with your fonts for branding purposes. That being said, if you are using a font in a logo, be sure it reads well on things like shirts, hats, other swag. Just because it looks amazing online, doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be legible or look good on other printed items.

Have fun and get emotional with your brand fonts. Questions you can ask: 1. How do they make you feel? 2. What vibes do they give off to a first-time visitor? 3. Do the fonts you choose represent your brand personality? 4. How would you describe your brand using just the font style? 5. Are they in alignment with your brand values and mission?
