One of the most important thing would be to have a realistic plan for the critical path instead of an optimistic one.

Communication is the best form to manage the project delays and monitoring. With the clear and transparent communication all the Project team stays updated through which one can implement the strategies and prepare action plans accordingly. Communicating with the team at times will provide a wider picture for the delays and can be mutual decided to tackle those delay to maintain the final deliverables of the project on time. Whether it be increasing of Manpower, resources, adoption of new technologies etc. Proper Coordination and communication also leads to ideas and different perspectives leading to similar outcome for the project.

The most helpful thing when creating a plan is to have a “Lead”. It means, always have a cushion built within the plan. Also, identify activities that can/may run in parallel as need be. Most of the cases the Lead will bring down the delays.
Some options to check when you adjust your plan: - Ensure that there is a focus on the critical path activities in terms of timeline as well as scope and and cost. - Check the option of onboarding more resources. - Check the option of giving incentives/ motivating points for overtime. - Check the option of assessing together with your client what are the real business “must have” items of the end product. Maybe at that point the needs of the client’s customers have changed.

Update schedule network and use float wisely. The key is acting swiftly and decisively on scope, resources, approvals and schedule while aligning stakeholders. I aim to be creative and flexible in getting delayed projects on track.

An example is to have a clear tracking tool which is then broken down from the larger goals, to the outcomes, outputs and the activities. The activities need to be time bound and with their own minor measurements to evaluate outputs. Keep monitoring of the outputs are what was anticipated and adjust accordingly before they become outcomes. In my experience this helps to achieve goals and to keep track of where one is with the project.

If we come to the state that our project "IS" delayed, it means we failed before we even started the project. The roots of our project issues and risks are in the Assumptions and Dependencies - they are the cause ;). Everything else is just an effect. The universal Law of Cause and Effect will not skip us because we hope it will. Not the client, the client's management/team, the secret lover of the main sponsor, or whatever you point your finger. One of the biggest factors is convincing the business to allow more resources to accellerate the completion. A project with a fantastic margin but over time is a terrible outcome, a delayed project delivered minimising the delay with a smaller gain gives confidence to the client and allows the business to save face, learn and move onto the next project with a happier client or one that will give a glowing reference. Worst is where the business pushs all the blame to the project team then they become disheartened and leave.. so the business now has a incomplete project and no project team... unfortunately this is the normal outcome for most of these situations.
