Before relying on a tool, every developer should learn about structured programming. My recommendation is "Structured Programming" by Dijkstra. This book was published in the 1970s and is still, if not more, relevant today. To understand that every function, procedure, and subroutine can be expressed as y = f(x) is to see every execution path in a block of code. It's past time for programming to adopt an engineering discipline. And it's not that hard!
