How do you introduce a new executive leadership model without resistance or conflict?

A good approach is to take time to talk to your team individually about the the plans. Explain what is intended and why, invite their input - and listen to their views. Many make the mistake of ‘announcing’ such changes. This is fraught with danger, much better to carry others with you through the process - this is what leadership is all about.

Sometimes you need to be dramatic to convey the need for change. One CEO that I know about was all "top down" decision-making. It was so bad that all the top executives went over his head to the Board of Directors and said they would all quit unless the CEO was fired. He was fired the next day and a new CEO was brought in. Upon arrival, the new CEO called a CSuite meeting. Before the meeting began, he asked everyone to stand back and he took an electric saw and cut the table in half. He announced that: "Things are going to be different around here from now on. We will work as a team where every opinion counts and we will make collective decisions." Everyone cheered!

Well introducing new executive leadership is an aspect of change management. The necessary preparations as stated above must be in place. Depending on the culture of the organisation and nature of change desired a gradual process and the right timing usually yields better results. A vehicle in motion may require significant slowing down to be be able to make a full 90 degrees turn to the desired destination but is the desired turn (change) is not significant then there would be no need of too much slowing down. It is also important to consider the management structure of the organisation; weather hierarchical or fiat. These can determine the amount of time and depth of preparation needed for such change.

Trying to implement anything without some negative response from those impacted is very rarely possible. Change of any nature impacts everyone differently… it could be the best idea in the world and you’d still get some who resist. It’s human nature so all you can do is set it up the best way possible through understanding the process of change and giving everyone what they need to process it effectively and accept it as quickly as possible. That being said … one thing that you must do is give others time to process… you’ve had it so let them too!!!

I would challenge the assertion that it’s possible to introduce a new leadership model without resistance or conflict. It’s not. Embarking on something like this with a goal of avoidance is foolish, and if that’s your goal, you’re setting yourself up for failure. I’ve found it far more helpful to accept difficult inevitabilities rather than figure out how to avoid them. This means embracing the reality that you’re going to encounter resistance and conflict. Doing so allows you to go into it ready to face the challenges ahead. From here you can immediately focus your attention on where there greatest points of resistance or conflict are, why they’re there, and what you can do to mitigate or work through them, so you can take action.
