We sustainability professionals call it Baseline Assessment as for us it is really important to understand where the organization is standing right now. For example, In order to train someone for a 10 Km race, you need to first see the present stamina of that person. For that, you will do an assessment of the person. In the same way, the baseline assessment will give details about the sustainability performance of the company and further performance in each sustainability domain.

Other that doing a baseline assessment (which is super important) you'll also want to perform a materiality assessment to identify the sustainability topics that are critical or important to your organization. It is important to do this exercise with other stakeholders in the company in order to get a full picture of the company's interests and generate buy-in.

One of the key factors that influence your organization's culture is the vision and values that you communicate and demonstrate. Make sure that your sustainability vision and values are clear, consistent, and aligned with your overall mission and strategy. Sustainability is not a separate or optional activity, but an integral part of your everyday operations and functions. To integrate sustainability into your culture, you need to embed it into your processes and systems, such as your policies, procedures, standards, performance indicators, rewards, and reporting. If an organization thinks that the sustainability department is solely responsible for it then it will not result in positive outcomes. You must have a sustainability committee having members from all departments. There should be frequent meetings to share knowledge and see what's going on in different processes and departments on KPIs.
