Having worked in the engineering development and design domain for several years now finding reliable properly featured IDE type tools can have a significant impact on project success. Meaning the wrong development tools can create personal stress, extended project timelines, and tool support difficulties. Personally, THE most important tool(s) is the ability to plan your design by implementing the Engineering Design Life-Cycle Process. I am a big proponent of documenting your work in tools like Evernote or OneNote. Organization is the key to design and development success, regardless of how fancy some IDEs might be.

Each person will bring their own perspective, based on their experience. In my case, I know the tool chain that I am familiar with (GNU), and the programming environment that I am comfortable with (emacs and Linux). However, it is always good to learn new approaches from your coworkers.

From my experience, - start thinking the requirement vs doing it exactly - spend some time on above as it will reward at the end. - go back and forth, zoom in zoom out. - go with imagination and instinct - you will definitely have some sketch at this point - start testing it step by step. - test, change, test, change and finally apply. That's it.

What is the tool's popularity among fellow developers. Is it well supported? Is the GUI intuitive? Can it be used by your team? Does it support your targets (family of Microcontrollers). Does the tool have up to date features that make development on an architecture easier?
