EIA integration into exploration and mining processes ensures long-term resource extraction while minimising environmental impact and meeting regulatory requirements.

Many countries in West Africa adopted environmental or mining law including environmental and social impact studies ahead of any exploration or mining activity. This forces companies to conduct an évaluation on the initial state of environment before gather initiate fieldworks. It allows companies and governments to identify impact of upcoming works and mitigate risks. The study has to be updated before any renewal of the license and includes a restoration plan whether the company continues or abandons the license.

Developing a cost-effective plan demonstrates efficient management, facilitating smoother approvals and gaining acceptance from the board. EIA is significant in mineral exploration & mining industry. To minimize adverse effects other than adverse effects of natural processes operating upon the Earth, collaborative efforts of a team of scientists rarely conducts integration of EIA process for assessments with mineral exploration and mining industry. Geology field is commonly the baseline of assessment. Yet, standardized procedures are independent in the organisation to harmoniously blend the conduct of assessment. It is important to be aware & to understand governmental regulations & compliance requirements to meet environmental performance efficiently. EIA report is required and environmental impact and their mitigation information are disseminated in public sectors.

From my perspective the struggle with EIA's is that junior exploration companies quite often don't have the financial backing to complete a battery of environmental sampling while determining feasibility of a project. To apply for a mining permit, a minimum of 2 years environmental monitoring is required. This can have significant economic impacts to the company, shareholders, stakeholders, as well as causing some projects to fail. It's a fine balance between mining and environmental protection.
