We cannot see the future, but we can review the past. Comparing past trends in performance and budget provide a great starting point for budgetary projections. As performance improves in a program, additional budget resources should follow.

Utilizing recent history is a great way to establish the baseline of items that may be “known” such as seasonal variations/timing. Once these are factored in you can eliminate some of the noise going forward to identify what other factors may be showing up.

As a project and program manager, improving resource and budget management skills is crucial for successful project execution. To plan resource and budget allocation effectively, I employ several strategies. Firstly, conduct thorough resource assessments to identify needs and gaps. Then, prioritize allocation based on project requirements and strategic objectives. This is why I love ERPs. Utilizing cost collectors (cost centers, WBS, Projects, etc.) allow for clear planning and monitoring. This lets you see what should be there (and a reason why it’s not) as well as items that shouldn’t be there. Active monitoring especially on large initiatives mitigates items coded to the wrong area.

Use WBS to capture earned value and keep a close eye on the spend and resource usage (esp resources who are not fully loaded for the project or program) This will give you a real-time view of the spend and help chart way forward.
