How do you handle pushy recruiters?

First, understand that "recruiters" is a big tent. And, under every tent there are clowns. Ask the recruiter to send you a position description for the role. If they can do so, they have a stronger relationship with this company than if they can't. If they do, and you are not interested, offer the name of someone who might be a better fit..you help a colleague and you create a bond with the recruiter. Finally, bear in mind that that "pushy recruiter" who may be less than totally competent may work in an organization with more experienced and competent recruiters. You want to build and maintain relationships with as many competent recruiters as you can...so be gracious.

If a recruiter is being pushy and unnecessarily uncouth PLEASE stop working with them. You don't need to explain anything, you aren't missing out on an opportunity and you aren't going to demote yourself for a job that has a sketch recruiter treating you some type of way. Always beware of scams. Please please please research the recruiter, the recruiting firm/company they work for and get as much information as you possibly can before proceeding with the opportunity. Before you provide any sensitive information such as IDs or SIN#, it is a good idea to visit the office location.

It is absolutely appropriate to set boundaries, and stand by them, if a recruiter is being too pushy. In some states it’s illegal for recruiters to ask for your most recent salary. Research if your state might be one of them. If they do ask it, you can say “actually, I was wondering if you could tell me the salary range, or budgeted salary expectation, for this role.” If a recruiter is disrespectful of your time, personal space, or information, I would absolutely tell them where they overstepped, withdraw yourself from consideration (if you’re no longer interested in the job), and cut off contact. Your mental health, and being respected, are more important than a job and team that won’t respect you back.

You absolutely do NOT have to disclose your current salary to get the offer you deserve. In some states, it is illegal for the recruiter to require you to provide this info. They may ask but you do not have to answer. It is better to do your research and inform your recruiter about your TARGET salary. You can then ask if that expectation aligns with the job's pay scale. Your offer should be based on what you bring to the table NOT your previous salary. As for signing agreements, it is standard for recruiters to have you agree to a right to represent for 1 specific opening since a company can employ several agencies that may also reach out to you in the future. If you didn't like or trust the recruiter you spoke to, you can opt out.

To make this clear - this is ???????? career and ???????? narrative. As a rule of thumb, good recruiters listen more than they speak. When they do, they ask questions about your motivations and want to understand you. This is a partnership you are engaging with - not the job center.

I entirely agree with the importance of verifying the credibility of recruiters who reach out to you! Once this is completed, everything is easier. Good recruiters are not pushy, although it's always good to act in a timely manner, for all sides.

In a lot of cases un-trustworthy and sketchy agents make obviously bad approaches to communication. If you are contacted via Social Media, check their profile and very important, their activity. Do they post often, what do they post and their connections. Check their portfolio and the credibility of their companies. If you are phoned, ask for details about them and their company. Don't be afraid to ask direct questions that require an immediate answer, and pay attention to their reactions.

Most recruiters have a LinkedIn. You can definitely look into it and see if they are active on there with posts and look into the company they are working for. A recruiter should never ask for things like your credit card information, social security number, or money. Take a chance and take the phone call with a recruiter. There is no obligation to commit to anything by taking a phone call. If you get suspicious you can always ask for more information, research the company discussed, or ultimately say you're no longer interested in engaging.

In all fairness, credibility can be an issue in any profession and not exclusive to recruiters. Online / LinkedIn searches can be great, as are company websites - we live in a review-based society after all. Personally, the best way to gauge credibility is by actually ???????????????? with people. A good recruiter for one person does not guarantee they will be for everyone. Remember - this shod be viewed as ?? ???????????????????????? ?????? ?????? ?? ??????????????????????.

Be clear about what you want and clearly mention dealbreakers. Ask questions to get clarity. Once you and recruiter are on same page only then work with them, until then wait and ask questions.

My motto is to always stay classy. Being nasty never gets you what you want and people talk to each other. If a recruiter in an agency marks you as "DO NOT CONTACT" in their system because you are being reactive it might discourage outreach from a different recruiter in the agency when they see that note. You can always limit your interactions with a bad recruiter and practice patience. Give the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they are having a bad day. If you find you dread working with the recruiter constantly you can always withdraw your application politely.

I implore anyone reading this to remember this is ???????? career and ???????? narrative. Recruiters can unlock doors to opportunities - but appreciate you are the key. Set boundaries early on and ensure you are the one dictating the conversation.

If someone from a company is trying to use aggressive tactics to convince you to accept an offer, you may not want to work there anyway. I care more about why the offer is declined. You won't get pushy comments from me. I want to know what we could do to improve.

Recruiter are pushy only for 2 reasons, pressure from management to fill that position, or they want to complete this asap. But in these both cases you will always get answers if you ask for clarification. If recruiter is sneaky and hiding anything, they might be harsh or rude at times but they won’t be able to give you clarity about your questions.

You can choose who you work with. There are many great recruiters on the market, but unfortunately also black sheep in the industry. Trust your gut and if you can I'd recommend you working with a recruiter who is present with an office in your area, they'll be closer to the reality of the market
