How do you handle bugs in your product development?

Finding bugs early is critical for product success. As a software developer and educator, I always emphasize a well-rounded testing approach, including unit and integration tests. These aren't optional; they're vital for effective resource management and customer satisfaction. Bug tracking tools and code reviews further refine the process. This isn't just about reducing immediate issues like customer frustration, but also about long-term efficiency. Practical exercises are crucial; they offer firsthand experience in bug detection, nurturing a quality-first mindset in future developers.

Bug reports (internal, external) and bug fixes should be traceable. Bug fixes should go through a review process before submission to masterpack (or equivalent build process), including how to reproduce the bug. Also, need to be careful what environment the bug is fixed in, and that environment stated (especially changes to it). Otherwise, the test environment may be unintentionally supplying somethng contributing to the fix, or the production environment may need changing. Depending on the architecture, the fix may introduce dependencies that shouldn't be there for different ports. So that needs watching out for. If masterpack gets broken by a fix (should be impossible), this gets priority to being brought back to health.

Efficiency in bug fixing is a fine balance between speed and quality. Having a streamlined process for prioritizing and resolving bugs is key. In my experience, communication and collaboration among developers, testers, and stakeholders are essential for this. Real-time chats, sprint planning, and code reviews are part of the toolkit for ensuring everyone is aligned. Documentation is another non-negotiable aspect. If you are creating multiple product lines from the same product line architecture, then you need a strategy in place so that the different ports use of any generic layer(s) that get fixes do not get way behind taking on these fixes. A great deal of pain can arise otherwise. Also, if the customer is a supplier of software that is part of your overall solution or of a runtime environment your solution executes on (e.g. if you are working with embedded system's suppliers), you may find bugs in their software. The nightmare then is when the bugs "disappear" at the supplier's end, and they reappear with their next (or later) submission.
