One of the way to grow your computer engineering career is to explore new things. You maybe are good in backend in a specific technology but adding more technology brings more opportunities. You can simply do so by joining more developer communities and explore the technology you want to learn. Meet with the folks working on it already. Ask your doubts and collab with others on projects. Contribute to open source projects as much as you can because that’s the thing you’ll be eventually doing when you join a company as an engineer.

Join and become active with the IEEE Computer Society. Become engaged as a mentor or a leader in the Society and develop your network beyond Linked In. Also, if you haven't, obtain your PE License.

Learning new technologies is a key factor in growing your engineering career. You can also learn new technologies from YouTube videos, academic papers, conferences, and through networking with others in the industry. Technology is constantly changing, and being aware of those changes helps ensure that you never fall behind in terms of your knowledge-base.

In this field learning is not an option. Every day there’s a new puzzle to solve so it’s important to learn how to learn above all else. Value your research ability and communication skills so that you can learn what questions to ask.

Everyday, something new comes your path. Absorbing new things and learning from them is the key factor. For e.g. Java started upgrading itself exponentially and if you want to grow, you have to learn exponentially. Industry changes rapidly and the exponential learning curve aligns you with the changes. One important thing I can say, be lifelong learner. Be a member of Professional Associations that work on Computer Engineering. This will give you information on recent trends of technology and research issues.

Personal projects are a greay way to grow your overall computer engineering knowledge. They provide you with the knowledge of solving a problem from start to finish, will help you learn become profficient in more programming languages, and can help you pick up good coding habits.

Mentor your juniors as they are the best ones to tell you what you want to re-visit as they ask a lot of questions when you mentor them. Same happens with your own mentors.
