Before you start looking for a mentor, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and what kind of support you need. Do you want to improve your skills, explore new opportunities, or overcome challenges? Do you need advice, encouragement, or accountability? Do you prefer a formal or informal mentoring relationship? Having a specific and realistic goal and need will help you narrow down your search and communicate your expectations to potential mentors.

There are many areas of healthcare management, and each area and level of leadership is nuanced. It's important not to find the highest-ranking person who is willing to mentor, because you may not be ready for that. FIrst, identify gaps between where you are and your goal. Second, identify people in positions to fill the gaps. The mentor may be someone at the same level as you but has more experience, or they may be someone at a slightly higher level. Lastly, if no one can make an introduction, reach out yourself. Explain that you have researched their work and ask if they would be willing to mentor you. Taking a thoughtful and methodical approach will help you build skills and expand your network in a very positive way.
I believe finding and working with an experienced and strong mentor is beneficial in any given field. But for healthcare, it can be especially important as this field is sensitive and sometimes can be very intense and demanding as people's health and lives are at stake. And there is a lot to navigate- clinical details, patient management, maintaining certs, etc.. With that, I've been mentoring for a few years now and my mentorees have found me on my Alma Mater's network - NYU's Violet Network. And one mentoree has been particularly engaging. So that's one option. Other sources are specialty groups, local medical societies, or hospital sponsored programs. Tap into those to find your mentor. One can also search here. A good fit is important.

It's one thing to find a mentor and another thing to utilize them, ask them for guidance, stay engaged, listen to what they have to say and maybe even follow their advice. As per above, one of my mentorees has been highly engaged and we've had some really great interactions, he has taken my advice, asked good questions and we continue this productive exchange. It's a two-way street. And whatever works best and what is possible - emails, messaging, video conference, phone call, in-person meeting, etc.. The key is to keep it going, of course if it continues to be positive, respectful, and beneficial. And I see nothing wrong with having multiple mentors. What I really like is to hear progress updates from my mentorees.
